I found another site with a bear sound clip.

This one is different than the sounds at previous link above. Not sure I'd call this a hoot, but maybe to some people that's what it sounds like.

Heard them Hooting....

I read this post earlier this month and I had to admit that I've never heard a bear hoot....or anything that I would suspect was a bear hooting and I was skeptical. However, this past Friday I'm sitting in my stand and at about 7:00 pm I heard what I thought was an owl hooting just to the north of my stand maybe 200 yds. It sounded enough like an owl that I blew it off. Then a second hooting comes from the west of my stand answering the first hoot and for 5 minutes or more, they hoot back and forth. As I listened to the hooting, I realized that those weren't owls I was listening to....it was close to what an owl sounds like, but more drawn out and throaty. Remembering the info in this post, the lightbulb finally went on and I realized that I had a pair of bears that were communicating back and forth and I was in the middle of them. Like I said, they went on for at least 5 minutes and then stopped as fast as they had started. The way they talked back and forth reminded me of listening to a pair of Loons calling from one part of the lake to another. I sat tight in my stand until I was forced out by darkness without getting a look at either bear.

Saturday night at about the same time I heard more hooting. This time from a different direction and quite a bit further away, but it was unmistakable that it was the same hooting call that I'd heard the evening before. Just before dusk I had a sow with a cub come in to my bait and each time that the hooting came from far away, the sow would stop and listen. I was hoping that she'd give a reply so I could see it for my own eyes but all she did was listen. As I was walking in from my stand just after dark I heard another pair hooting way off in the distance.

I've been a deer hunter for 40+ years and have hunted bears for the past 10 and this is news to me. I don't know if in the past I've just written the hooting off to owls or it just hasn't happened on the evenings that I've been on stand, but it definitely raised the hair on the back of my neck!

I've seen and heard owls hooting and at first they sound similar. Similar enough that if you don't pay attention to it you can easily right it off as owls. But these hoots were too throaty and longer than any owl I've heard. In the part of Minnesota where I hunt, I rarely see/hear an owl before dusk. These bears were ripping it up an hour before sundown. I'm 99.9% sure it was bears I was listening to. If you watch bears a while, you'll see that they ignore most sounds around them that are natural....dropping acorns, squirrels digging in the leaves, grouse walking/flushing, etc. But the sow that I was watching would stop, look up and listen to the hooting each time she'd hear it. If she'd given a response, I'd be 100% sure.

The last couple of nights i've heard them again, going bk and forth. One of the nights it was not quite dark yet. Going to go up on the mountain, in general direction where i heard it coming from. I know there is no guarantee that it will help, but i may just get lucky Big smile .

The light went on here too. I heard the same hooting sound friday night at about 10:00 I passed it off as wolves or coyotes but the last half of the sound was kinda throaty with a growly sound and longer duration than an owl hoot. if they were communicating between each other one will be waiting an awful long time. I shot one of them Sat night.
