Beautiful!! Were you able to preserve the velvet like you had planned? Does it then last forever? Or will it still at some point possibly disintegrate?

I took the preserv-it with me and tried to inject? A very difficult process and I do not feel I was very sucessfull! I shot the animal on our last full day of hunting and had the cape and antlers to a taxidermis within 2 days. The guy I took it to has a lot of experience with mounting antlers in velvet. He said he would freeze them then inject them multipl times and eventualy soak the antlers in a preserving solution. He says they should last forever and I would just need to fog them with an insecticide every now and then for good measure?

It was sweet, every one shot 2 animals and we quartered in the field and packed all the meat out. We took all 4 quarters, the back straps and even had a way of getting the inner loins without gutting the animal. Once the backstraps were removed we would cut through the backbone at he 4th true rib (from the tail) and pull the back half of the spine away fron the body. This exposed the inner loins slick as can be. We were allowed 100 lbs of meat, so we boned all the quarters at camp and everybody took home close to 100 lbs, plus racks and capes. One rack was free the second cost money.

Thanks for the info ADKBEAR. I've always been curious about how to preserve velvet on antlers. Fogging with insecticide is a very good suggestion. Years ago we had a beautiful mounted pheasant and bugs had destroyed it before I realized that was even possible. Ended up throwing it out because it was so heavily damaged, it had just fallen apart. Big bummer...

Yeah it is not bad at all. The head, antlers and cape weighed in at about 40 to 50 lbs (estimated ?). I packed it out like that about 3 miles with very little discomfort.
