Yes they really do roar! During the rut (Sept. through Oct.) these animals will raise the hair on your neck. They are very aggressive, so the lions roar is very appropriate. When these guys lock horns , you are in for a real show. When I stocked our preserve we added females to the mix, adding females makes this preserve hunt much like it would be in the wild, and I do mean wild!
Stalking these animals is extremely exciting, when you consider you are on the ground with them and they weigh 600 lbs, with a massive rack. For the not so brave, a comfortable tree stand is a safer choice, but if you want excitement, take to the ground, but look out!
At night you can hear the stags ROAR from a long ways off. We hope to build a hunting camp outside of our preserve, and I can only imagine what the hunter will be thinking when he or she hears this constant roar through the night! Talk about the excitement that will build overnight, anticipating the next days hunt, you will not need an alarm-clock! ........From down on the farm, Mark

Nonya,
They do have an eerie sound that is not duplicated by any other deer. The red deer and fallow deer are the two oldest deer species on the plant. Their have been fossil remains of red deer that had huge racks and tusks. The tusks gradually became their eye teeth that are like ivory and are used in jewelry making.

burrman,
Didn't get to Argentina. Going in July. Not going to hunt Stag though.....Too much money! I decided to spring for an airline ticket and a cheaper hunt for me and my father instead.

sapling,
Are the red stag on ranches or are they free ranging? Can anyone buy a license and hunt them or do you need to hunt with an outfitter? Can you hunt them without an outfitter if you live there and have permision to hunt someones land? Is there public land to hunt? I am still hopeing to get to hunt them in Argentina one day with my friend.

I have seen a lot of pictures and some real impresive stags from New Zealand. It seams to me that you are very fortunate to live and hunt there.
When does your hunting season start? Its almost summer there isn't it?
