Hardees Caves In to PETA

ST. LOUIS - The Hardee's and Carl's Jr. fast-food chains will begin purchasing eggs and pork from suppliers who do not keep animals in cages or crates, spokesmen for Hardee's and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Wednesday.

Both chains are owned by Carpinteria, Calif.-based CKE Restaurants. Hardee's is based in St. Louis, while Carl's Jr. headquarters are in Carpinteria.

The agreement aims to improve the welfare of animals that provide food for the 1,905 Hardee's restaurants and 1,101 Carl's Jr. restaurants, said Jeff Mochal, a spokesman for Hardee's.

"We take the animal welfare concerns very seriously," Mochal said. "When you meet with PETA they make a pretty good case. We want to stay consistent with where the industry is at now and where it's heading."

CKE becomes the second major fast-food restaurant company this year to begin moving toward cage-free chickens and pigs. Burger King announced similar changes in March.

Matt Prescott, assistant director of PETA, said the animal rights group first approached CKE in 2004 and discussions were renewed last year.

CKE has agreed to:

_Immediately begin purchasing 15 percent of its pork from suppliers that do not use metal "gestation crates" to confine sows, and increase that to 25 percent by 2009.

_Purchase 2 percent of its eggs from suppliers whose hens are not kept in wire cages by July 2008.

_Issue a statement to poultry suppliers stating it will "give consideration to approved suppliers who actively explore and test controlled-atmosphere stunning systems," which animal rights groups consider the most humane way to slaughter chickens.

"The companies that kill chickens for them will get the clear message they need to move to this less-cruel method of slaughter," Prescott said.

Burger King's changes called for 10 percent of pork to be purchased from suppliers that do not use gestation crates, a percentage that would double by the end of this year. Burger King also began getting 2 percent of its eggs from cage-free hens with plans to more than double the percentage by the end of the year. And like CKE, Burger King said it would give preference to suppliers that use or switch to controlled atmosphere stunning.

PETA said it has used media campaigns and behind-the-scene negotiations since 2000 in an effort to get fast-food and grocery chains to reduce animal suffering.

"Consumers oppose the cruel treatment of animals, so we encourage other restaurants and food retailers to follow CKE's lead," PETA vice president Bruce Friedrich said.

Here is the letter I emailed Hardees.

To whom it may concern:

PETA members are not your customers. They do not purchase your products. I have eaten at your restuarants for many years, but I will no longer patronize your restuarants until you rescind your agreement with PETA.

The choice is simple - choose between me who does eat a $6 burger or PETA who does not.

I encourage everyone to take a stand agains PETA and write Hardees.

No go ahead.

I told my wife what I did and she couldn't understand why. I tried to explain to her that this has nothing to do with Hardees and from whom they choose to purchase their products.

It is about PETA forcing them to do it. PETA is anti-everything I am and the more they can force corporations to do their bidding the more powerful they become and the more likely that they will achieve their goal of eliminating hunting.

This is not really about Hardees but standing up to PETA.

I just wrote my letter!

If they want to cater to PETA, why don't they just stop selling meat products altogether and become a fast food vegetarian restaurant chain.

I will no longer be eating at Hardee's or Burger King.

We are in agreement on this.

My wife and I debated this issue for some time. She said, well can't PETA have their point of view? Well of course they can, but so can I and I must make mine heard.

PETA wants to ram their point of view down my throat and I must push back or they will be successful.

If Hardees wanted to make the change on their own then I wouldn't be so concerned, but they are doing it because they fear PETA. Well, Hardees needs to fear losing its customer base more than PETA. If I don't speak up who will?

We all need to speak up against groups like PETA who threatend our freedoms and who want to impose their own warped values onto us.

Stepping down from soap box now......

CVC, I couldn't agree with you more.

PETA is a psychotic, radical organization that places animal rights over human rights.

They want to do away with animal research altogether. They want to save the lives of animals at the expense of human lives. I may be a redneck country boy, but I don't think it takes a genius to figure out that their warped way of thinking is just wrong.

They promote the bombing of animal research facilities that could cost human lives. Their response is that, is if it costs one human life to save the lives of several animals, then it's OK and for the greater good.

Personally, I would kill the last guinea pig on earth myself, in order to save the life of a drug addicted, crack head lying on the street corner. Human life is more important to me than the lives of animals. They just don't get it.

Anyone that sides with PETA is certainly on my bad side.

Laugh That's just so absurd! Do they plan on having slaughter houses switch to last requests, lethal injections, and calmly speaking with the livestock during their final moments? I'm pissed! I really liked burger king for my fast food fix. I only eat there twice a year though, so I guess I won't miss it. I'm really shocked that information like this isn't more public. It's a very secrective warfare technique if you ask me. I'm starting to believe there is a new iron curtain, and it's right here in the states! What gets me more is they are probably paying more for there ordering now, and will have to increase rates. Ouch. I wonder what sort of methods PETA used to get them to do this. Blackmail? Threats? Maybe once some key members of PETA have livestock stomping on their lawn due to not being penned up they'll think differently.

It is absurd. I think they probably threatened them with protest.

I read an article about some people in Austria trying to get a chimp declared a person. The court didn't go for it, but this is the type of activity we have to watch out for.

Many people support giving animal rights, not just ensuring that animals are properly cared for, but they have rights just like you and me.

BTW, I never received a response back from Hardees.
