Just in case anyone's not seen this, here's a new website. The vote's coming in just over a month, so pass this on.

It's already restrictive
It's already restrictive enough up there, you don't need to keep tacking on these idiotic rules.....

Not Gone Yet
We failed to have it abolished. All of the conservatives voted to get rid of it. The liberals were ordered by the leader to vote to keep it. In the end some of the democrats who vowed to vote against it voted in favor to keep it . When it was all said and done we only missed getting rid of it by a couple of votes, but hopefully we can get a conservative majority gov't in and get rid of this waste of taxpayers dollars in the future.
We all know criminals don't register firearms, never have and never will

I am sorry it didn't pass.
I am sorry it didn't pass. The US and Canada are different countries, but we share a lot in common. Things like people who think that passing more laws will stop crimes. Enforce the ones on the book, not pass more. Criminals won't register their guns only law abiding citizens will. What I heard when I was there the idea behind the registry was so that law enforcement would know who might own a gun before going to their home for some call. Sounds like a red herring to me.
I hope your elected representatives keep at it and restore some sanity to the gun laws there.
BTW, it was a piece of cake for me to get my rifles across the border. Customs never looked at them. More concerned that I had a cross bow which I didn't, just a compound bow.

A gun registry is the most
A gun registry is the most rediculous idea out there. What a beautiful idea though for the people that want to eventually take your guns. This will do absolutely nothing... not a thing to address crime. I am really sorry for you guys. Would you say that the majority of Canadians are anti-gun or do you rather just have a government that misrepresents your majority. I really feel for you guys. I am scared though that the day that we will be facing something like this in America is not far off. I can not wait to get out of this recession but I fear that if the democrats are in charge when that happens then they will jump on the chance to whack away at our rights.

Why do liberals believe
Why do liberals believe passing new laws when there are existing laws on the books will stop crime? The laws are only honored by the honest. The criminals do not pay attention to laws and more laws mean nothing to them. Often the laws on the books are not enforced or light sentences are given to criminals. Most crime is committed by repeat offenders.

In the case of gun control I
In the case of gun control I do not think that they actually believe that new laws will really have all that much of an affect. I think they are more or less not comfortable with the idea of anyone owning a gun and therefore they try to pass laws making it harder and harder to purchase, own and use firearms. That is why these laws don't affect criminals. They are aimed at us law abiding citizens. If they really believe that new laws have a positive affect on crime then they are the numbest people on this planet because the statistics don't lie. There is no since in their ideas. I think they are driven by the irrational fear of guns.

I hadn't thought about it
I hadn't thought about it like that but I think you're right. They pass new laws under the pretense of stopping crime, being tough on crime all the while knowing that it won't impact the crime rate. Their hidden agenda is to ban gun ownership because they know law abiding citizens are the only ones that will be affected by the law.
This of course, while true, is seriously irrational. They should encourage more legal gun ownership by law abiding citizens as a deterrent to crime. States that pass concealed carry laws see a decrease in crime.
