Gun Free Zones

Some members will remember that a few months ago we discussed concealed carry in the classroom, the thread is linked here:

Anybody want to discuss it again? To help things out, David Kopel penned a fact based editorial in the wall street journal yesterday arguing against gun free zones and carry in the classroom.

Studies have shown that concealed permit holders are overwhelmingly law abiding. IMO classrooms should allow permit holders to carry. It's ludricous to suggest that being in a classroom will turn these people into homocidal maniacs when they're upstanding citizens everywhere else. Sure, I've been in a lecture or two with a professor that drove me up the wall -- but not to the point of homicide.

It's not the law abiding permit holders they need to worry about. It's the crazies that can't/won't get one. If one of those snaps, the lawful permit holder could easily make the difference between one fatality and 33.

Unfortunately, college professors are about as left-wing as they come, and would rather sacrifice themselves and their classes on the altar of liberalism than take action.

FYI, Koppel's position isn't new about allowing arms to responsible teachers. He wrote about it in 2004 for the NRO.

Just didn't want people to think this was a new position developed because of the VT shooting....

Gun Free Zones

The Israeli position on armed teachers makes perfect sense.

Gun free zones are a nice pipe-dream but, unfortunately, the real world is a harsher place. I don't for a minute want highschool students walking around armed but it's entirely reasonable for teachers, administrators and university students (who are old enough to be shot up in Iraq, after all) to carry if they choose. What most people don't understand is that in order to get a concealed carry permit you have to have a background check and are required to take a training course. Those with CCW permits comit WAY fewer crimes than the rest of the population. I don't carry myself but am very comforted when I know that others around me are carrying. It's like hanging out with the Marshall in Dodge City.

Police departments view CCW holders as the good guys.

I think it is pretty obvious that most of us in here are going to agree that putting up a sign "gun free zone" doesn't make anybody any safer

Actually a few months ago on this forum, it seemed to be the consensus that CCW's in the schools are not necessary.

Apparently Colorado State University allows licensed carry on campus...
