Guess I'm a Collector?

Stopped by a little gun shop in the next town from where I live on my way home yesterday.  Sitting on the used rack was a Savage Modle 99 in 300 Savage.  Checked it out and it was a Utica gun (made in the Savage Arms factory in Utica NY, original factory before moving to MA in the mid 1900's).  Was in pretty good shape with an after market scope assembly that would swing off to the side to allow use of the iron sights (very cool) with an old 3 power weaver in it.  Also had a small (1/2 inch D) brass compass intetted into the top of the butt stock (still pointing North).

Price tag said $375, (a good deal on this gun) and I asked if they could do better they took another $50 off.  Gun went home with me.

Thing is I already have a 99 in 300 Savage (also a Utica gun) take down that i bought a few years ago.  I guess i am collecting them?  Always have been a fan over other lever guns, one because they do not have a tubular mag and no hammer.

Nuthin' wrong with being a collector! I do draw the line though with rifles I bought to use and then do not. Several guns have moved away because they seemed to hide in the back of the cabinet while lots of others went out and shot stuff!

The M99 is a very nice rifle, I've owned two myself, both in .300 Savage. I still have the scope that came on one of them, a Lyman 3X All American Perma-Center. It looks awfully good atop a 1952 Winchester M70 in '06. Yes

Nice looking rifle. I don't

Nice looking rifle. I don't have duplicates of anything at this time but you never know when it could happen as like you did I just stumble on things and they sometimes end up going home with me. I plan and plan for what I want next but usually get something else due to situation like this. That's how my laminated tikka 270wsm followed me home. I had no idea how badly I wanted one until I saw it on the used rack waiting for me to show up.lol

Looks like a great purchase to me.

Exactly, I was actually looking at an older Savage 110 (in really good condition) 300 Win Mag, used at Gander Mtn.  It was a 110 so nothing fancy but i only wanted it fot the action and barrel.  If it was a shooter I had plans to put a new B&C stock on it a Timmny trigger and a decient scope. The price was good but not great so I was giving it a little time to sit on the shelf before I went in wheeling and dealing.

Instead i blow my "gun fund" on another 300 just not a Win Mag, but I just needed that gun ya know?

Think I have a "safety bonus" coming up at work................................ that 110 may be in the picture yet?

That sounds like a good deal

That sounds like a good deal tp me ADK Bear!  Good snag!  Collector? Heck no., you just have a back up gun now in case of malfunctio or breakage.  You have to get at least three identical models to be a collector ;)

At least that's the argument I use for myself ;)  Thumbs up

Test Fire

Well I swabed out the old girl and stepped out the basement door to my 50 yd target last night.  Shooting 150 gr Rem cor-locks (factory).  Shot real nice good grouping but about 5 inch hign and slightly to the left with the scope.  Cranked the scope over and the iron sights were about 3 inches low but dead on vertical.

Seems I saw that Federal puts out a 165 gr round for the 300 (saw on line somewhere never local in a store).  Think I will hunt down a box of those.  Keep shooting the 150s out of the other 99 and get the new one all dialed in for 165's.  Kind of pumped for early bear up in the Adirondaks.

Photos new one on top.

We all might be at some stage of being collectors ;)

Collector or not, i think its awesome.  Glad the gun went to a good home with someone familiar with it.

I guess we all make impulse buys, whether we double up on a gun or not.  For example, just last week I was visiting my girlfriends family in Minnesota and her brother was selling his Beretta Silver Pigeon for a decent price.  Did I need the gun, probably not, but situations come up that you can't pass up on.  I knew one day I would end up buying an Over/Under and since I had read so much about Beretta's I figured opportunity on certain things only knocks once.  Needless to say, it went home with me too.  =D

Congrats and enjoy.  Thumbs up
