I won't go into any bear

I won't go into any bear country without bear spray. Even black bear. Getting between a black bear sow and her cubs will ruin your day.

My buddy was working a gold claim in Alaska. His partner was across the stream. Suddenly a grizzly attacked my buddy. he put 6 shots into it with a .44 mag revolver. It kept on coming. By then his partner picked up his .458 mag rifle and stopped the bear. So, if you have an elephant gun with you. You might not need bear spray. Otherwise, i'de carry bear spray, and not depend on a handgun for protection.

Bear spray

The thing that concerns me about bear spray is the wind, if the bear is down wind of you it may work fine ?. But if you have to spray up wind, the only thing that is going to happen is your going to get a face full of spray your self ?. JMO. that is why i carry a gun.

Odds are if the wind is that

Odds are if the wind is that strong then the bear will not be able to sense you and you will be OK.  The big thing is that nothing is perfect and the odds of you getting a one shot kill on a bear that is charging you is very unlikely.  Mostly all you are going to do is make it madder, and give it more resolve to get to what ever is making it mad.

It will still work. It has a strong spray and shoots about 40 feet. You might get some in your face, but that's better than a bear in the face.

A charging bear is not easy to stop with a bullet. How many bears have you killed on the spot with a bullet? They usually always run, and that's when you had time for a careful shot with a rifle.

The spray doesn't stop them. It just changes their course. (away from you)

Actually i have only shot 2 bears in my life ( black bears ), both were with a 44 mag, and they both died on the spot.

with all the attacks here lately, i may start carrying both.

Grizzly

Seems like this year there have been more attacks. I know where I live in North Idaho they are closer than most people want to think. Although I have not seen one yet. I have seen quite a few black bear this season and am heading back out to elk/deer camp on the 15th
