Great Hunt

We had a great hunt during the 2nd season in units 12 & 13. We had a great time. It was our first trip to CO, but deffinately not the last. We shot a 4x4 muley but could not capitalize as the snow set in as we found the blood trail. I would have loved to been dragging that muley out though. We never did see any elk though. We learned a lot of lessons though. Thanks for the good tips guys especially about the GPS as that came in handy. I can't wait for the next trip. I would love to hear success stories as I am sure ther are plenty as I seen them heading down I-70.
Thanks guys

Glad you had a great hunt. I have hunted the Jensen area in Area 12 and have seen quite a few elk in that area in past years. If you are going to hunt in this region, I would suggest the Coal Mine area (between Meeker and Craig) in Area 211. This is a migratory route area and 3rd and 4th seasons are awesome for the area. We usually camp in the Milk Creek area and have seen herd after herd in that area. A few years ago the Game Wardens had to stop traffic on Hwy 13 to allow about 500 elk to cross the highway. The public hunt area starts about 3 miles West of there. Needless to say that year everyone filled their tags.

Good luck on future trips.

Thanks for the tip. We were hunting around Yellow Jacket pass. We found nice places for elk and seen a few tracks. We should have probably waited till the 3rd season as it was a little too warm in my opinion for the elk to come off of that high elevation or up near Sleepy Cat maybe would have been a better place top find the elk. Thanks again

Waltor1980,
That Yellow Jacket Pass area generally draws a lot of hunters. Did you run into lots of orange this year?

Plenty of orange out there. They seemed to be coming out of the woodwork up there. There were alot of great people out there that were willing to lend some advice and there were some yayhoos out there to that wanted in on our spot. Too crowded for me.

That where i have hunted in the past, last yr we hunted 2nd season and got 30 in of snow in 1 night! Needless to say it was a tough hunt. I like the 3 points mtn(milk creek) That where i got me 5x5 3 yrs ago. Have had a lot of luck in that area, i really like the top of the cat which is accessable mostly by atv ,foot, horse! Were going back up there next yr just not going to camp as high. Stay closer to saw mill mtn!

We had a guy shoot a 5x5 right behind the camp at yellow jacket pass last year (2nd season). But, they were saying that it had a great deal to do with all the snow. Didn't have but a little snow this year (2nd season). But great advice folks, thanks alot. Can't wait till the next trip, probably in 2010.
