THE GREAT DEBATE

Hello, this will not be inflammatory, I have no intention of trolling or disrupting the board or site. The only purpose of this thread, is to have an intelligent discourse with like minded people of good temperment with regards to why it is or is not okay to eat meat. As a forward, I won't be replying to anyone who is flaming or just attacking, I would like to have a thoughtful conversation with whomever out there is open minded and interested in having one.

Again, I hope this thread is not removed, as the behavior and language will be moderate. It is just a healthy discussion.

I suppose I'll start it off with my macro viewpoint which is, that is wrong to kill animals in order for us to eat. We kill cognitive beings simply for the pleasure of taste. We do not need to eat meat for survival like our ancestors, we have grocery stores that could supply us with decades of meals without meat. It is a choice we make as a people.

Some will say, it's our right, we evolved this way. But we also used to rape women, that was intrinsic. We also used to steal from those weaker than us. However, we evolved to one of the higher levels of evolution, which is a moral evolution. Empathy. We realized we have a choice, and we can morally rise above those decisions. I believe killing animals for meat is one of the biggest and longest lasting hold overs of our moral evolution. We end cognizant animals' lives for no reason other than we like the taste and texture of their flesh. That is all. Pigs are more intelligent than dogs, so all retorts about animals being dumb and have no feelings have no bearing.

I'll say I have a little more respect for hunters since they are actually aware of the what happens during a kill, and what happens to the animal before it hits the plate, as opposed to consumers who just eat innocuous pink flesh wrapped in plastic. But the moral argument still remains the same. I don't believe we have the right to kill Billions of animals each year, simply for the luxury of taste.

I greatly appreciate anyone who would like to respond tactfully and tastefully. I can't respond to people who just yell, curse and flame because it will waste everyone's time and not help either side.

Best,

Spellman

May I suggest that you take

May I suggest that you take your views to some other forum. This is a hunting forum. It is not Disney World. We are hunters. We are here because we like to hunt and to read and write about hunting with other hunters. We also know that hunting is necessary for proper management of wild animals.

If you want to be a vegetarian, fine, be one. Go home and eat your lettuce and drink your soy milk. Your mind is made up, so is mine. Neither one of us is going to change, so lets not waste each others time.

You stated that you "don't believe we have the right to kill Billions of animals each year, simply for the luxury of taste." Well, it's time you woke up to the real world. Animals have been eating other animals since the beginning of animals. Insects, birds, fish, reptiles, mammals all eat other insects, birds, fish, reptiles, and mammals. Why should we be any different?

Even your beloved pigs eat meat. As omnivores, they eat just about anything that they can chew. At least as humans, most of us at least kill our food before we eat it. Most animals don't.

Besides that, I love the taste of meat -- red meat, white meat, birds, fish -- BBQ'd, fried, broiled, baked, grilled, deep fried -- it all tastes great. Now some cooked vegetables, and even the smell of some vegetables cooking will make me gag. I would have a hard time swallowing some cooked vegetrables, even if you paid me.

But we need them to keep the post count up on the forums here.  Not to mention sometimes they are interesting just to read something different.  Argue

I always wonder how folks

I always wonder how folks that have a moral problem with killing and eating animals reconcile the rest of nature?

Moral?

Welcome to BGH Jack Spellman

I agree this is mabe not the best place for this discussion, atleast not in the "Whitetail" section, mabe in the "Anything Goes" section would be more appropriate.

To give the OP my answer, I do not believe that it is Immoral to kill an animal for food. My God tells me that we were put on this earth by him and that we have dominion over all of earths inhabitants and that animals are here for our pleasure and we are charged with their care. I also did not "evolve" from an Ape. Perhaps your God tells you a different story I don't know. I am supposing that you have some sort of God as you did mention morals.

So long and short of it is you have your stated "morals" that you have "evolved" into and I have my Morals as dictated to me by my Creator. If it bothers you to eat meat, then by all means do not eat meat. It bothers me not, so I will continue to partake in the Bounty my Lord has provided for me until he tells me differently.

OP, there is no, "great

OP, there is no, "great debate".  You have made a decision on how to live your life.  That is your right.  You were born with eye teeth, as are/will be your children.

You may think yourself, evolved or some such, but it is merely a decision you have made.  Nothing more.

I understand you believe eating meat is not necessary, I think you're a fool.

Like the saying goes, "There's plenty of room for all god's creatures..........right beside the mashed potatoes.  :)

It has been shown that it is

It has been shown that it is much better health wise to eat meat from free ranging animals.

You are correct,

Just look at what the "medicated" meat from the grocer is doing to our bodies.
Most of the crap we buy is not even close to what we think we are purchasing.

I'll eat my fish and venison over store bought anyday and live heathlier and longer.
The rest is up to the our creator.
