I have a gun that was my Grandfathers that I'm wondering if its worth anything. Should it be hanging in a museum or am I Ok to continue enjoying shooting rabbits and squirrels with it?
It''s a Winchester Model 42 410 ga. Pump.
I never knew him, but I give him all the credit for filling my veins with hunting blood. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and my only link on both sides of the family to the great outdoors, so the gun does hold some sentimental value! Wish I could have hit the woods with him just one time!

Ouch! That sound's like a lot of money. But here's the deal. Your Granddad probally didn't pay anything near that for it and got it to use! It would seem that he would much rather you enjoyed it as he did rather than seeing it as an investment. You'll never get enough out of it to buy a new house, a new car or even a year in school,,,,Use it! Just take special care of it. It may be all you'll ever really know about about this guy you never knew but call "Grandpa".

Wow I would have never guessed that it would be worth that much, but it would have to be worth a whole bunch more before I could part with it. I think I'll be taking a little better care of it from now on!
Any suggestions on how I might go about cleaning it up a little more. Like what to use on the stock to bring out the old wood and the proper way to clean out around the action.

I wouldn't do anything other than the odd cleaning. It may decrease the value and it won't be the same to you neither.

Got to agree here, best thing you could do is take it out and hunt with it.

Bought a new box of shells today. Plan on taking my 6 year old son out to chase a few squirrels and tell him what I know of the person who used the gun

Cool. It should be a fun day and your son will learn some family history.
As far as caring for the gun. I have always used linssed (?) oil on the wood stocks. Keeps the wood well protected from the elements.

Here's a pic of a couple of the squirrel we got Today. We had alot of fun and My son is ready to head back out. That Model 42 is a Great squirrel gun
