I actually spent way to much

I actually spent way to much time on the computer trying to answer a lot of questions that were asked by a lot of newer members.  Since I am retired it was just time that I took away from something else that and submitting a couple of stories helped me.  But there are a lot on here that have been here a long time that made this forum in the first place that don't have the time to sit at a computer and answer a lot of questions.  The big problem that I saw last month was a member asking a question and then in the next minute puting in his answer to get two post.  Then there was the question of how many days are left, and then coming back and answering with 99, then 98 then 97 and so on.  Also looking at a lot of the point totals it didn't look like there were too many deductions.  I know that I had some but that was from me deleating a post that I made.  I also wonder just how this will help the fourm after all the contest are done and if you will have anywhere near the paticipation and web hits from members.  I can't wait to see the questions that are going to come up when we get into the months with the first prizes being rifles, but then I won't be around much then since it is going to be hunting seasons and I'll be out on the hills.

I'll agree the running a contest and coming up with rules and then people to enforce the rules is diffucult but it seams like some of the ones here could of been a little better thought out.

I just went through and

I just went through and played with a few things and perhaps found a few places that could be tweeked to get the paticapation back onto the fourum and off of the side thing.  One is commenting on a picture in the gallery for 100 points.  And with comments such a "wow", "what a pig" and so on.  Then 10 points for voteing on a comment without even having to read the comment.  With this post I just gave myself 50 points for answering my own question witch is ok under the rules and then 10 more points for voteing on it.  We need to get things back onto the main pages with questions and answers that mean something.  Until then you just need to learn how to play the point game until the rules change.

First off there will be no

First off there will be no changes to the contest rules until the next  round.  We are working on tweaks for the next round to address some of  the issues discussed in this thread as well as to keep the contest  interesting and fair.  We may look into using the voting mechanism as a stronger metric for determining contest winners.

We are committed to the idea of using the contest as a way to reward members that contribute to BGH.

Here are a few facts, statements, and suggestions:

1.) The first round of winners was dominated by members that had been around for some time. Only 3 of the top 12 contributors signed up on or after the July 1 and one of these 3 had actually contributed to our Photos and Stories before so was not new to the site.

2.) There is no bias toward old or new members.  You win purely on contributions in the current round period.  The fact that some members contributed more prior to the contest has no bearing on the current contest.  If they choose not to participate at a level necessary to be competitive to win that's up to them.  The contest will naturally favor those that have more time to spend on the site contributing.  We are looking at future contests that remove this element, although we have no comment on when or if they will occur.

3.) We were pleased with the first round of contest winners.  They won with well rounded contributions of tips, photos and stories, photo galleries, votes, and forum contributions.

4.) Questions and answers are only a small segment of the utility of a forum.  Forums are social by nature and members will all have different opinions of what is valuable.  Posts and comments that are objectionable or break forum or contest rules are deleted.  Points are revoked where necessary.  Just because you consider something to be "nonsense" doesn't mean everyone does.

5.) We adamantly refute the idea that the contest is filling the forum with "nonsense."  Use the subscription feature to get updates on specific forums and members that you want to follow rather than just using the "active topics" to get a pulse on the entire forum.

6.) The forum is a relatively small, but important, portion of the purpose and traffic of BGH.  We welcome people to contribute and comment on the non-forum portion of the site.

7.) If you feel a comment, post, picture, etc is in bad taste or breaks forum rules; please report it by using the Abuse button or by contacting us. If you disagree or dislike a post but it does not break forum rules, please vote it down.  We pay attention to negative voting and abuse reports.

VERY WELL SAID!!!!! The only thing I dont like about the voting on winners is, most of the posts where people need help with somethingis in the rockie mt or colorado, for me I'm not a help there cause I've never been there, not to many people come on here to ask for info on Oregon or animals that we hunt here.  I do like how so far the points have been tweeked for the first 2 rounds it does keep it interesting. I just dont see the piont of changing the rules when only 2,3, or 4 people arent happy about them.

Picture points.

First of all would would like to say thanks for all of the great prizes and a awesome site that BGH has offered up to its members.

There is one thing I would like see changed, that is you only get 20 points for posting up a picture and the guy who comments on it gets 100 points????? K maybe its just my opinion but I think that some one who really spends some time in the field to harvest a animal or getting trail cam pic's, ect. should be rewarded for it and not the guy posting a comment to the picture, I just think the points should be reversed.

I have been a member here for some time before this contest had started and quite often dropped in to read the posts articles and tips I didn't have to log in all the time like I do now but I have to say I'm spending allot more time here now and have abandon our local site. So after saying that BGH has done its job in attracting new members and bringing the old ones out to participate more actively on the site.

I live and hunt on a limited budget and any thing I can win is greatly appreciated and is helpful beyond belief so yes I will spend some extra time here posting and hoping to win one of the great prizes they have. I will continue to be back to show off what I had won and how it played a part in my in my hunting season.

Thank you

GH

PS. Thnx to all the guys posting up in the tips form, I've had 3 or 4 that have really come in handy this year already!

Good comments and questions

Good comments and questions groundhog. The reason the photos get much lower points, is due to the fact that the gallery software makes it easy to create photo galleries quickly. A person could literally upload a hundred or more in very little time.

As we've stated we do pay attention to the feedback and will continue to tweak for each new round and for future contests on BGH.

It is great being a back yard

It is great being a back yard quarterback and finding ways that would work here on the forums but for every idea there are both positives and negitivies about them.  I would like to see more points for paticipating in the main forums, stories, and the hunting tips areas.  Like you said a person could upload 100 pictures in a half hour and gain a lot of points but the same can be said for posting a comment on the same picture.  I do enjoy the photo gallery but 100 points for a comment does sound a little bit too large.  Perhaps knock down the points for the comments on the photo gallery, hunting tips, and stories down to 30 or 40 and leave the rest about where they are.

Like I said it is easy sitting here at my computer while you are sitting there trying to make a decision that is fair and ballanced.

Keep up the good work.

I agree with a lot being said

I agree with a lot being said here. IMO, more pts should not be allowed to the person who comments on a pic than the original poster of a pic.  If I post 5 pics and someone comes along to comment on all 5 pics, then I'll get 100 pts while the other person gets 500 pts.  The pts awarded isn't distributed in a fair manner. At the very least, they should be awarded pts equally. I believe the photo gallery would grow exponentially if that were the case. As far as comments on the pics, it's pretty much in line with the comments that have been said in the past when most pics were posted in one of the regional/game specific threads.   I believe this contest, and the forum as a result, will gain in popularity the farther into the contest we get. So it's good to get these issues addressed. And this contest is partly about creating traffic  and attracting new members to the site, isn't it?

I also think that the

I also think that the positive and negative vibes thing on the right side of the post needs to be fixed. I think if someone hits the up key it should also give the person who posted the original comment 10 points. This would help with everyone hitting it on every post just to get the 10 points...

I guess when in Rome...... lol Wink
