Got my idaho tags for elk and mule deer. Looking at zone 21A but have never hunted Idaho. Plan on backpacking in a few miles and camping. Any advice would be appreciated.
... where ya from? Idaho is kind of steep.
I'm from Minnesota, and don't plan on winning any race. I've got two weeks to get in and out. I am working out everyday to prepare. Just wondering if there is any advice for that area.
I have not hunted 21 ... but let'ssee if some others on the forum reply.
Only hunted unit 27 middle fork. if it is at all the same terrain get in shape that country can be straight up and down! we found that good optics is a must in idaho. fires have really changed the area we hunt in. and fires have plaged idaho the last few years, find out if the area has been affected by fire and also hate to say it by wolves. You will find idaho a very friendly state to non res hunters the people are not quite as arrogant as some of the other states i have hunted. Wish i could be more help with unit 21.Dave
As I recall a lot of 21 burned last year.
Soules2007 ... I am thinking of hunting in 27 with a deer tag this fall. Not looking for a trophy - but an excuse to poke around. Did you go outfitted or DIY? Are you going back in?
DIY me and my brother planned to hunt showerbath springs. Ended up on the other side near the loon creek ranger station. and the diamond ranch. this year we are hunting the b tag in the same area in sept for elk deer bear cougar and hopfully wolf, the animals are really spooked because of the wolves ended up taking two bucks decent 4 by 5 and a decent 4 by 4 and one cow in an area we had never been to and have never scouted. The ranch runns hunters up in that area and hates the competion(on old topos its called the boyle ranch) and they act like they have the area behind the ranch blocked off however with a little research we found that you can get through via the ranger station and they have to give you access. Thats just FYI. I also saw many deer nice deer near the mosiquto flats campground outside of challis, some real nice bucks right off the road. but i am not sure this area is huntable during certain seasons, you would have to find that out. By the way a bear trashed our camp and the resovoir/lake be careful. Hope this helps.
... we'll probably fly in and hunt up from the bottom. Yeah, lots of predators. Did you see any bighorn sheep over on your side?
Thanks Soules, I'll check on fires in that area. Does that keep the game out completely or do they like the new growth? I'm thinking of flying out and looking around. How's the conditions this time of year?
No bighorn sheep but the country looks right for them, one of the areas we hunt is about a six year old burn and the deer are plentiful.
Bearant - I think it was Unit 19 that burned to the ground, so I don't know about 21A.
Soules2007 - do you have any pics of your bucks? I'd love to take a look. I was on a sheep hunt in there last year - and all the deer hunters were tagging out - nice deer but nothing spectacular. One morning I chased a 4 x 4 up a hill en route to a perch to look for sheep. A couple days later we recognized the deer flopped over a horse on the way out.
