Kremling is a big elk destination as well although I've not hunted that area myself.

If you haven't already got on, get a DOW app, and in the back of the booklet is a map of the units around a town.

colorado elk hunts

I would probably recommend a cow hunt for your first hunt. Several advantages: Better success rate, cheaper ($250 vs. $490), and you can use this trip as a scouting trip for a future bull hunt. There should be left over cow tags that can be purchased over the counter.

Other than that, I would need more info to make recommendations. For instance: bow, muzzleloader or rifle? Drive to a camp sight or pack in? On your own or with a guide?

If you have your heart set on a bull, I do know a guy who runs a hunting consulting service. Same price for one or a group. He will put you in a good spot and supply maps, videos, pictures, etc of the area to hunt. I killed a 29" 8x7 mulie where he sent me last year. Next time I am going to have him point me to a good bull area. Be advised that his forte is a pack in type hunt. He can show you some honey holes that way. For just camping out of a pickup, it is a lot more weather dependent and how many hunters show up there that particular year. Here is a link if interested.

It was money well spent for me as I spent 8 preference points for the area that I hunted. I think his packages run $325 and $725

No, this was an early (Sept.) rifle hunt in the Sangre de Cristo wilderness. We hunted in an area that horses could not get to, so we had to backpack. Camp was about 4 miles in and I killed the deer about 5 miles from the truck! For an elk, I want a horse!!!

I don't know how to post a picture, but I will email you one if you send me your email address.
