Depends on what you have. You might want a decoy, maybe a blind, knee pads, warm weather clothes. You won't need muc really specialized gear

Do you think it would be smart to set up over a waterhole. I figured i'd bring my blind, but i figured all the good water holes would have experienced pronghorn hunters already set up on them. Is sitting over a waterhole that affective?

In August, hunting over a waterhole is the way to go, especially if you're used to hunting whitetails from a stand. A majority of western hunters are used to spot and stalk hunting and don't have the patience to sit on stand all day. If you can, plan your trip so you arrive a couple days before the season opens so you can scout and then get to a spot before the other hunters and you're good to go.

I bought myself a buck and a doe decoy. Do you think they will work in August?

light weight breathable cloths for hot weather. but prepare for bad weather too!! water holes are the ideal place to nail the goats. but a spot and stalk is also a fun way to go to if the option is available, u might try using a montana decoy there light weight and compact and they come in handy when you cant sneek up on them or get them at a water hole. good luck.

I'm hunting the week of August 22nd. Do you think the pronghorn will be rutting. I have a buck and a doe montana decoy and i also have a primos call. When i blew that call for the first time, it sounded just like my crow call. Is that how they really sound?

Re: Going on my first antelope hunt!

i have never herd a antelope make a noise. i would probably leave the crow call at home. late augest there might be some pre rut action goin on, im in nevada the conditions may be diferent where you are. but antelope are curiouse animals, if you cant get the water hole and u have those decoys get as close as you can with out being seen. throw up those decoys and give it some time they will or "should" come close but remember dont be posted up next to the decoy have it set back and to the side of you. they have excellent eye sight and will be focused on the decoy. to many times have i seen hunters get busted by animals coming to the decoy becase they pull up the bow or gun and spook the animal becase there to close to the decoy. when you set the decoy back behind you and to the side, you'll be more closer to the antelope when it aproches. plus you dont want to get shot by another hunter shooting at ur decoy. most the time this works the hard part is trying not to get busted those antelope have binocular vision, and see everything. the water hole is the best set up, you'll have goats from all around hittin it threw out the day. but this is a good back up plan. good luck to you.

Re: Going on my first antelope hunt!

For an August bow hunt I'd set up near water. That's the place to be. As far as specialty gear and clothing go....August in Pronghorn habitat is pretty hot and dry typically. Bring plenty of water and a brimmed hat. Bring good footwear appropriate to the weather and terrain. Too many people always overstress waterproof boots these days, but believe me, in hot dry terrain during that time of year getting your feet wet can often be a welcomed blessing. Just don't be walking around in no sport sandals. For that time of year I'd place more importance on a boot that's light weight, breathable, and a has a reasonable outsole, they don't need to be waterproof. About the only severe weather you'll need to worry about is extream heat, thunderstorms, and maybe hail. You shouldn't need to bring any heavy clothing, maybe a fleece pullover or camo hoodie for the early mornings. Pronghorn country has lots of bushes and thickets, so wear the right pants. I usually go with Carhartt or Dickies canvas carpenter pants. They're heavy and stiff at first so wash them and wear them during summer yardwork to break them in. The canvas does a good job of holding up to pricklies and giving you reasonable protection. For shirts I go with a camo short sleeve t-shirt or a camo long sleeve t-shirt. Drab colors always work well in pronghorn country too, like coyote brown, khaki, sage, olive drab, etc. Bring along the usual gear - binos, field dressing gear, insect repellant, etc. Game care is very important in hot weather. You'll want to field dress your antelope without delay in hot weather and get it skinned ASAP. If you really want to know what the area and weather will be like, scout the area in June or July. Chances are the weather will be the same in late August as it was when you scouted earlier in the summer, so you can get a good idea of what type of clothing, footwear and gear you'll need for August.

Antelope are very vocal. I'm always amazed how much they communicate with each other, much more than deer.
