GMU 45 Elk Hunt

As a few of you know from some of my previous threads, I have drawn a cow tag for unit 45 (I'll also be buying an OTC Bull tag). Now I am in the process of trying to find where I want to set up camp. I've been using the DOW's interactive unit maps and have found a few campgrounds but...:

Which part of the unit should I go for?
&
I like to camp away from other people, can you only camp in a designated fee-based campground? Can I camp anywhere in a State wildlife area? Etc, etc-trying to avoid people as best I can

Thanks!

Greg

P.S. I've been using these maps: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/GMUnitMaps.htm

Greg,
Most of the Forest Service country that isn't near a popular reservoir or creek will allow camping anywhere off the shoulder of the road. I don't specifically know where people will or won't be in 45, but one good general rule of thumb is to drive to the most inaccessible place you possibly can, then hunt from there. Some places I have hunted take considerably more than an hour to reach by car once you have hit the Forest Service boundary. But there's no point in camping near there if you don't plan on hunting near that spot. So first try to figure out where you want to hunt, then worry about campsites.
As for which part of the unit to go for, it just depends on how you want to hunt and how much work you are willing to put in, and what the terrain looks like and where you think the animals will be if unpressured and where you think they'll go if pressured. Simple, right? Big smile

Thanks exbio-you always answer my posts and I'm very grateful for that!

I'm excited about all of the potential areas to camp, I want to get away from the crowds-where I don't have to set up camp at what looks like a camouflage expo. Now I just have to figure which area to hunt in, and what the Colorado regs are for camp fires
