gmu 11 colorado

I am going to colorado for the first time with my father. We got draw for gmu 11 2nd seasion rifle for mule deer, and we are hunting cross mountain. just wanted to know how the hunting pressure is and the chances to see a wall hanger. My dad is also getting a leftover cow tag, and I'm getting a bull tag. Any information would help out alot. Big smile

Everyone's definition of a wall hanger varies, but your chance of getting a mature buck, say 5 years old is fair. Depending on where you're from pressure will seem moderate (about 3.5 hunters/sq mi of public land) to intense. Of the public land deer, there's about a 13-16% chance of a buck making it 5 years old (survival=inverse of mortality, which is about 28%, plus an extra fudge factor of 2-5% for natural mortality of bucks).
Cross Mountain is kind of popular, but few guys will get to the good country on top of the mountain..
There will be both elk and deer there.

Thanks for the reply. I also heard that if we get some weather there's one of the biggest migration trails that go threw cross mountian, is this true.

yes, but unlikely during second season. That usually happens during December.

Thanks to the internet and a few magazines cross mountain is now very popular. This WAS my favorite spot until about five years ago. If you hunt out there take lots of orange and good maps. Know where you are because the outfitters in this area will mess with you. They talked the DOW into writing my friends tickets for hunting on private. The game warden didn't have a clue where the boundries were so he just wrote the tickets. In court, with the federal land surveyer on our side,we proved it was blm. The next year the DOW accused me of hunting on private land and I had to show them that it was BLM,after the hunt was blown. Make sure you know where you are at all times. Best bucks I have found were in Three C Wash, rite on the rim. As for the migartion, it is better south of cross in the Pinion Ridge area. good luck and be safe.

thanks for the heads up stepup 380. I was also wondering were i could make my base camp. On the maps I have, it say there's private land almost all the way around cross mt.
