Getting game out of the woods (newbie question).

I have never hunted big game but I want to. I am also in the market for a new vechicle. I was wondering if I should get a 4x4 instead of a car. How do people usually get their game (which would be mostly deer in my case) out of the woods? ATV? Horseback? Car? 4x4? I live in Calgary so I would be hunting mostly in this area.

WELCOME to BGH.
Car is your worse choice, 4x4 truck next, ATV better yet, someone else to do it, even better Seriously it is going to depend on so many variables and something you must consider before you down an animal. Time of day most important.

I suppose I could use an off-road motorcycle to drag my deer out of the woods, but I'd be the only one doing it that way.

Not sure of your situation...but here we pack it out on our backs with the good ol' Trapper Nelson pack board ! We get it to the boat, atv and then use those to get to a vehicle on the road. We are almost always a long long way from any roads.

Perhaps start with the consideration the you'll be packing your deer (whatever) on your back.

How do you get to your hunting spot? If you have to walk a distance then you have to look at ways to get your game to your vehicle no matter what you buy. The various game sleds are helpful as are the packs mentioned. If you have access to an ATV great. Although not ideal, the dirt bike you mentioned would also work as long as you were careful and went slow. I wouldn't be worried about what the other hunters do as long as it works for you. Thumbs up

Regarding 4x4

I definitely would get a 4x4 for starts. Also get a good quality back pack for packing out your meat. It would be nice to have a quad as well ,but if you cant afford one get the other two things first. Yes
