Gknutson, I know what you

Gknutson,

I know what you mean. I've been trying to step up my conditioning more than what I have been doing. But it seems like the warmer weather the busy to list get even bigger. Before we know it we will be waking up and trying to fill out tags.

This is the first year since

This is the first year since 2006 I have been truely excited to chase elk again. I don't know if it becuase I am chasing them with a bow again or if I am just making it fun again instead of making it work.

Good luck to all this year chasing elk and good hunting.

Why I stopped elk hunting

fire5197,

I have been a passionate elk hunter and truely love chasing muleys ever since I can remember. I have been fortunate enough to see giant muleys and huge elk all of my life (my father and uncle were both guide and outfitters until I was around 10) and taking a truely large bull became an obsession of mine. I made it into work instead of being out there enjoying what hunting is all about (to me) and the way I grew up hunting. I was literally making myself misserable trying to get it done and when I did my hunting group was to the point of breaking also. My group was getting bigger and I was the guy making all of the plans taking care of animals and doing most of the work when it came to getting them out. It turned into a job ! Confused

When I finally killed the bull of my lifetime in 2006 (the bull in my avatar) the emotions that went through me and the amount of work it took to get the job done, and then it get it out, took me two days to recover and I felt bad because my son still had a bull tag to fill and I did not have anything left to help him out. I also felt like I have made my boys and my daughter into trophy hunters instead of the way I grew up hunting and just enjoying the outdoors, family, friends, and filling the freezer with whatever legal animal you got a chance at. Don't get me wrong I have some of the best kids on the planet and they have taken some nice "little" deer, but they are wanting to hold out and wanting to find the the biggest, badest bull or buck out there.

I guess I have just gotten to the point where I want to experience and enjoy the hunt the way I used to. I am planning on saving my points to hunt elk in unit 40 (I have 6 PP now) in the next couple of years though and I hope to make it the hunt of a lifetime without making it a "JOB". ::laugh2 This year I plan on heading out with bow in hand and helping the kids and enjoy the experience. If I get the chance to release an arrow great, if not, it will still be great.

Good luck to all hunting elk this year and enjoy your hunt !

Quinton

60 days.

60 days left before my oldest boy has his Early Rifle Elk Hunt, 75 days left for their Deer Hunt, and then 124 days left before my youngest boy has his Late Rifle Elk hunt. But who is counting. We scouted yesterday and got some more pictures from the trail camera, jumped a big boy also. Check out new pictures if you get a chance.
