General Season Elk

This last weekend was opening weekend for General Season Elk in Utah. I had plenty of cows come with in 50 ft and the only time I saw a bull was when he was at a full sprint running threw the thickest stuff on the mountain!

I don't know if General Elk has started anywhere else but lets hear some stories and see some pics!!

I didn't go out last weekend for the opener. We are going to head up Thursday and stay for a few days. the area I hunt needs a little hunting pressure around it to move the animals into the canyon we hunt.. Besides did you see the weather on Sunday.

I got out and saw a lot of elk. But none of the spikes I saw were in places that I was willing to climb down into and haul an elk back up. We will head back out Tuesday and maybe I won't be so picky.

Here is rag horn bull that I got close to one evening.

Well I went out again this weekend to Unita Canyon just north of Roosevelt and saw about 50 cows and a few bulls on the Indian Land (go figure) All the Elk were moving up and down this one canyon and one bull was just screaming his head off. Saturday night I hiked up the canyon and the wind was perfect and right as the sun started to go down that bull starts bugling moving down the canyon. Every 5 min he'd let out a bugle and it was getting closer and closer. Finally he let out a bugle and you could tell he was within a 100 yards moving down. You could hear him breathe and hear the rasp in his bugle. I put my sights right to the little clearing he'd be coming into. All the sudden the wind changed and went up the canyon and everything went silent. The next morning I went to the top of the canyon and worked my way down trying to catch this bull that was bugling and my buddy would meet me at the bottom of the canyon. Well some Dumb A$$ decided to move up the canyon trying to pull the bull in with some bugles. He just scared everything off. I get down to the bottom to find out my buddy had 3 good bulls run right in front of him on the road and stopped 50 yards from the truck in a little opening. Hopefully I can find a bull this week before the hunt ends!

We had a good hunt this year. Usually I get an any bull tag but this year I got a spike only tag so that we could hunt our favorite unit. We got a bull on the first day then another on the second day. There were so many elk bugling we almost moved our camp after the first night so that we could get some sleep.

Here are some pics. Check out the deer right in camp checking out the hanging elk. (I'm in the bottom pic)

Thanks. My deer hunt plans got messed up.
I wish I could find another big game tag but I think I'll be turning my attention to pheasants for the rest of the season.
