I have the roads and recreation for my legend and it works awesome, easy to figure out and read. It also has an unbelievable amount of detail.

Are you talking about MapSource? TopoUSA is made by Delorme. I use MapSource Topos on my Vista. It does a super job, and I'm tickled pink with it. It's great for producing customized maps of an area, and I love being able to download the track log off the Vista and having a map that shows everywhere I've been -- great for mapping out trails, etc.

Isn't mapsource the only one that works for garmin units? At least that's the only one that they sponsor.

I've never heard of Garmin using anything but Mapsource -- as far as I know that's the only one that can send maps to a Garmin unit. However, there are standardized download protocols that will allow your Garmin to download info to third-party software. For example, I've downloaded waypoints from my Garmin to TopoUSA, and had my Garmin provide real-time position data for Microsoft Streets & Trips.

GPS units can export position data pretty easily. But when it comes to putting data into the GPS, you're pretty much going to have to stick with proprietary (i.e. Garmin) software.
