Funny call from Dad

My Dad just called me.  He's sitting in the kitchen, watching a coupld hundred birds attack his bird feeders.  They have a big storm headed their way (Vermont) and the birds are feeding like crazy.

Anyway, he said he was sitting there, when all of a sudden, this hawk comes flying in a picks off a finch of some kind.  He proceeded to sit there and start tearing into it.  My Dad said the wings and feathers were getting pulled off, all over the snow... lol

He looked it up and said it's a Sharp shinned hawk.  I guess they have a reputation for hanging around bird feeders and plucking off the unsuspecting little guys.

Just thought it was funny.

They do learn where the

They do learn where the better places to find a good dinner are at.  Animals are amazing to watch just to see what they do.  About 15 years ago I was sitting on top of a small hill watching a pasture that had some cattle in it.  There was also a coyote that was hanging around some cows so I started to watch him.  He would go up to a cow and start to yap at it.  He wouldn't try to bite the cow but just annoy it, then the cow would stomp its hoofs and the coyote would jump at something.  This went on for around 30 or so minutes until I figured out what was going on.  When the cow would start to stomp her hoofs it would chase out a mouse to where the coyote could see it.  Then the coyote would nab the mouse and go on to another cow.  The coyote did this until he had his fill and off he went with a full stomach.

If I hadn't been elk hunting at the time I may of gotten myself a coyote but it was just interesting in watching him and the cattle.

I actually did have a cow elk

I actually did have a cow elk tag in my pocket along with a bull tag that year and was just waiting for the elk to move down out of the thicker timber to the field to start feeding.  Now if they would just let us have a moo cow tag that would be easy to fill but would tick off the ranchers.

I have never seen anything

I have never seen anything like the cow story but I have seen coyotes leap into the air and drive thier nose down into the snow to catch a mouse they could hear moving down below. It is a very comical and enjoyable show.
