Four guys rob me of my Raccoon feeder

I guess I want to share this with people from this Forum, to get some input.

In retrospect I don't think that my action was proper at all. It could have cause me a lot of trouble.
But my intention was to scare and not to harm anyone.
Without further words...

The house is next to a piece of woods and calling the police is a waste of time, they come after the fact with all lights and sirens blaring and any crook can hear they coming a mile away, and retreat.

My dog was barking bloody murder recently, I can tell for the way he barks when an animal or a person is lurking in the woods near the house.

My procedure is exit the house by the farther exit, (in this case the garage door) and circle around quietly until I am in position to evaluate the situation.

The dog also appreciates the moral support of my presence.

I wear dark clothes and a dark watch cap just for those intrusions.
My gun is a 1911 with Laser Grips and extra magazines loaded with Federal's Hydra-Shocks 230 grains. I have a cell phone and a radio to communicate with the house to let then know what is going on.

My flashlight is one of my modifications, the MAG 951 II (1050 "real" lumens)
Thirty times more powerful than a regular Maglite 3 D on which is based, even more powerful than the 1 million candlepower spotlight.

Unfortunately two of the culprits were going away with the price when I switched on the light, they were already 35 or 40 yards into the woods and started running when I put the light on them, two others guys were close and half blinded they tangled in the bushes and thorns in escaping, a couple shots from my pistol slamming in the tree near by, hasting they departure.

The price was my raccoon feeder with 5 pounds of corn (don't laugh, made by my hands it was a masterpiece) in exchange I got a nice 18 volts Ryobi drill-screwdriver and a pliers.

Neighbors are far away enough than shooting even the entire night will not bother them, calling police for a stolen feeder will serve only for something to joke around in the squad room.
I guess the raccoons will go hungry this winter.

wow i can't believe some one would take a raccoon feeder! What you did wasn't all bad. Might have done the same thing in your shoes. Last year some one stole my families ATV's right from our garage while every one was at work or school. There lucky i wasnt home cause theres a .357 near the door for those kinds of things. I still cant get over the fact that some one would steal a racoon feeder!

Thanks Scotty.
I think that the fact that they will bring a power tool to remove the 3 inches long Deck screws that hold the feeder to the tree, suggest that was a planned move, that the feeder was well camouflaged with plastic leaves used by bow hunters, but they still find it suggest that they were "casing the joint" when they discovered it.

To confront a furiously barking Rottweiler for 7 or 8 minutes made me think that they were stoned out of their minds, if you add the fact that the act was perpetrated at 2 a. m. suggest that they were no "kids"

The whole episode is so ridiculous that I posted it to share with the guys in the Forums, as I subscribe to a few Forums I have been getting some "flak" about the legality of discharging a firearm to scare or stop a thief, I have been told that the legal thing was not to do nothing, after all it is just a feeder!!!

From where this new teaching that we have to bend over and take it is coming from, I don't know, twenty years ago I never hear of such a things, I think that the D.A. the lawyers and the courts are making this nation gun owners afraid to use the guns for what they were mean for.

If we have to take a lawyer with us every time we want to shoot a gun to advise us of the legalities of the act, we don't have the freedom that the second amendment have granted us and that we are talking about all the time.

Sure we can buy the pretty guns but discharging them is so FORBIDDEN that will soon we will become a nation of wimps.

may be you should invest in some crow poppers as i call them. Basically what they are is a shot gun shell that shoots out like a fircracker its used mostly for scaring crows from crops but i use them for dogs and other things that i just want to scare. They make them gor 12g shotguns mostly. Blanks are always good too. Any way i dont think those guys are gunna be back any more they know a gun lives in that house Big smile

Obviously is NOT because the raccoon feeder, but the lack of respect for the action of stealt it brazenly in the face of my furiously barking dog (for 7 or 8 minutes) for the time of the thievery ( 2 a.m.) and because I am fed up of been the target of thieves ( I had two tree stands and a expensive deer tracking camera stolen from another property that I hunt)
My neigbour have an ATV stolen right from the garage, my hunting buddies also lost stands. My uncle got a new tractor stolen from the tool shed.

Tell me that any red blooded american will not do the same thing if presented with the situation in which could impede the thievery or at least put the fear of God into the culprits.

In black bear's defense I would argue that when he went outside to see what was going on he probably didn't go out there knowing the issue at hand was a raccoon feeder. I think I'd grab a weapon, too, before investigating an unknown disturbance outside at night.

Remember, too, that Tookie Williams was executed for murdering three people over a hundred bucks. I'm not trying to change the subject, but there are some nuts out there that place a very low value on human life and would be willing to sacrifice the rest of yours rather than risk losing some of theirs.

All that said, though, it'd be tough to argue that one was justified using deadly force against petty thieves who were fleeing the scene. Most state laws require some form of threat to be present to justify self defense. In New York they probably require you to catch 2-3 bullets with your body and then respond with nothing more powerful than the caliber used against you. So as upset as I might be in that situation, I don't think I would fire a weapon toward the perps -- even if I was trying to deliberately miss. The cost of being wrong could be pretty high. Not much use for a coon feeder in prison.

firing a handgun in the dark at unknown targets (people) for an unknown reason? You would have gone to prison if you had hit one of them in my state.
