Forget the wind, just hunt?

Forget the wind, just hunt. Who has not heard that slogan? Well the argument might never cease. However after seeing an episode of Mythbusters today, and watching Adam and Jamie trying to trick a bloodhounds nose with all kinds of myths, I came up with an idea
I got onto there site and posted on there "Myth idea" forum, where you enter myths you would like them to solve on TV. I asked them to find out if its a myth or fact that you can fool a big bucks nose. If you have a minute, go to there forum and post to my link asking them to do that episode... I for one would really like to see it!!! Heck, you might even have something to add to my idea to make it better!!!

I don't care how it turns out. I'll NEVER stop hunting according to the wind.

You can fool his eyes: Camoflauge
You can fool his ears: Calls
You can fool his nose: I don't think so!

The only place scent free suits might work is with ground scent. Even with that, I'm not 100% convinced.

I'll be safe and hunt the wind just to be sure. That's why I have stand setups for every possible wind direction.

Just my 2 scents.......I mean.....2 cents.

.......but above all else, hunt safe my friends.

I don't mind hunting in the wind. in fact in my area a windless day just doesn't occur

I don't worry about the wind much. While I'm sure they can smell you, I doubt they take off right away. There is only a short time each year that human odor could be associated with danger, the majority of the year, if they even smell it, it's nothing. I think it's best to move slowly and hide as much as you can. I've set on a lot of stands where the deer obviously smelled me because they would look my way. But if I stayed still they didn't bolt.

Well the only way you can hunt according to the wind is if you are hunting around mountians and valleys where the wind is always traveling in a uniform direction, But say you are hunting where I do (in the southeast), the wind changes so often that you will go crazy trying to hunt the wind. I do use some scentblok stuff, the titanium scentblocker spray, odorless deoderant, hunting chewing gum, and the dream season boots with scentlok socks

You gotta hunt the wind if you're a serious hunter. I realize with a lot of guys, if you have a permanent stand, you don't have much choice, but I guarantee you'll get "busted" by wind direction more than anything else.

Hallelujah ! If you are upwind you will be caught, but you never know for sure where those bucks are coming from, so get out there and see how they respond! I've had better luck not worrying about where they will come from rather than trying to predict where they will come from. I'm not sure that made since, but i have spell check and about 8 buds under belt. Time to head back down to the lake Big smile

YOUR DAMN RIGHT WIND MATTERS NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS ON HERE ILL ALWAYS READ THE WIND.

Think about it if the wind didnt matter more hunters would be comming home with deer so many hunters have had deer close to them in the bush and probably not even known it because the deer picked up the scent right away or the hunter was not watching the wind atall and it was blowing right to the deer the whole time. He's not gonna stick around to see the end of your barrel. I think whitetails are if not the smartest animals pretty damn close. Not just whitetails though this applies to all big game animals. They all have great senses of smell not just deer.

Plus What does that help when the wind is blowing your scent right into thier nose they are gone just as fast as they were there and the deer could have been comming right to you so many people miss deer because of this and I guarentee someone has proved this before. The deer could also be 50 feet from you sitting in a thicket and not even see movement or anything but you can guarantee He'll be gone he might stick around for a couple seconds just because of the curiousity but if the scent is too overwhelming hes gone for sure.Just my point of view Im not trying to offend anyone.
I use scent cover sometimes but most of the time I use an old family trick Boil some pine bows in a nice big pot and after about 15 mins of the pine bows boiling dump your hunting clothes in there and let em dry outside Try it out you might like it, the fresh pine smell is pretty cool too its the only thing anything will smell.Great for the ride there too makes your vehicle smell like that great pine tree scent.

You can't control mother nature - just when you get situated for North wind ol' mother nature switches it up on you - at least in my area.

And unless your stand backs up against some impenatrable barrier from which no deer can come there is always a chance that the buck is going to come from your bad wind side.

I will try to position myself down wind from where I believe the deer will come, but I focus more on sent control and limiting my movement. Seems to work because I've had numerous does right under my stand, looking around sniffing the air and not get busted.

Usually, if I do get busted it is when I make some kind of movement.

Scent control is key no matter what you use.

Re: Forget the wind, just hunt?

I hunt in a closed in tree stand most of the time (because down here it can get pretty cold in late oct nov) my stand is small and has plexi sliding portals on 3 sides for easy opening and shooting as i have 3 seperate lanes ,in extreme cold weather i seen where i used a toilet roll heater to get warm so i could stay longer. one time i watched deer for almost an hour through the portal in the front of me while they ate apples it wasn't cold that day so i decided to slide open the portal in the rear of me as well ..and what do you suppose hapened poof off they went , as soon as i created a cross draft my scent went right to them ..I know it wasn't the noise because the portals are completely silent !
