Fish Lip Pain?

CNN article:
Anglers carp at 'fish pain' theory

Study shows some rainbow trout flop (rock?) around when stung on the lips (fish have lips?) by bees.... PETA calls the findings "obvious". Anglers call it obvious too....

The poll on the page is interesting. When I checked 86% said they would not stop eating fish even if the fish felt pain.

What the...??

How do you possibly get trout lips and a bee in the same place without some flopping going on anyway?

What are the odds that a bee could ever sting a trout in the wild? This is like saying elk will attack dolphins if given the chance.

Now I know why the Brits pay so much in taxes. Somebody has to fund research like this!

I surmised about the same. It doesn't seem that "rocking" or "flopping" is a very good indicator of pain.

A fish out of water flops in a manner than I'm willing to wager is stocastic. Chaos usually is something you want to eliminate in a stastical analysis like this. End result is that the study proves nothing and even if it did people would still eat fish.

Now I have to wonder if someone allergic to bees should eat trout.

No I think it means if you eat trout you become allergic to bees.

Why do people get money to write about and study stuff like, "Bees stinging trout lips caused some of the fish to display a "rocking" motion!!"???

SOME of the fish, not even all the fish, displayed a reaction. I would like to know how many times this experiment was actually done to prove that fish swim, which maybe the rocking motion, once placed back into the water!!

The most amazing thing to come from this article is that PETA supported the killing of Bees to prove that fish feel pain... How do they justify that??

Actually, this study suggests that fish may be highly allergic to water. Put a fish in water and it instantly starts a violent, obviously painful rocking motion that propels it all over the place as it tries to find a way out. But if you take a fish out of the water, the rocking gradually subsides and finally stops altogether when the fish is dry.

That's a good point Ex. If the scientist are going to use rocking as a pain indicator, fish must live in a chronic state of pain....

Now about needing to justify bee killing, Quicksilver. To PETA it doesn't matter, since bees are insects. However I'm sure the folks over at the Insect Rights Association would be upset with this senseless killing of honey makers.
