First Wyoming Pronghorn Hunt

Hey Folks!

First I would like too say Howdy! I have been surfing the web looking for information and I stumbled into this web site and man it has been great. It is so full of information and experience. Ok I have kissed a&& enough...... lol

Anyway, I have the bug! a friend and I who have been hunting together for 20 years finally decided it was time to make a trip out to the good ole' state of Wyoming to hopefully fill a pronghorn tag.... We have been researching as much as we can: surfing the web, watching videos, analyzing the plethera of information on the WGF website but we are looking for actual experience and advice. this is our first trip and hopefully not our last.

First, What the heck is BLM the abreviation for? I have to claim ignorance since I am the one who wants to know, I have seen it stated in many posts. Enquiring mind wants to know...

Second, I have been looking at the HMA program and from what I can gather this is the only land available for certain areas... Am I wrong or right? While we are on the subject are the HMAs a good place to hunt? From what I can tell it looks like more does are taken than bucks on most of the HMAs. Give me your $.02....

Third, since this is our first time would it be better to hunt the first opening week or should we wait until the rut? Give me your pros and cons....

Fourth, We have a friend who has hunted the grasslands in WY but that was 15 years ago. Would you recommed trying for an area in the grasslands or does it really matter?

Fifth, I have been looking at the buck to doe kills posted by the WYGF and do a lot of other hunters try to get tags in those high buck kill areas and miss out on opportunities in other areas and possibly miss out on the draw?

Okay, i think that is enough for now... I don't want to blow a fuse.... I am sure and probably will have a lot more questions for you experienced folks......

Please be gentle, remember I am a newbie at this... thanks for any of you alls help. I can be emailed at yankeehunter@Gmail.com if you are willing to pass on a life experience filled with pronghorn tags.... Oh, I am not a "yankee" hunter, I was born in Delaware.... It is a nickname I picked up from a German hunting buddy.... Thumbs up

Re: First Wyoming Pronghorn Hunt

Welcome. Lets see if I can answer your questions.

I've been to WY twice to hunt antelope and it is a blast.

BLM - bureau of land management - federal land open to the public. WY has state land open to the public too. Get a map that shows blm and state land so you can see which units have public access - real important.

Second, I have been looking at the HMA program and from what I can gather this is the only land available for certain areas...

We had to hunt an area this year that didn't have much blm or state land, but did have HMA land. Found it to be crowded and heavily hunted.

Third, since this is our first time would it be better to hunt the first opening week or should we wait until the rut? Give me your pros and cons....

Not really sure if there is a better time. The antelope get a little spookier as the season goes on, but in some areas new areas open up later.

Fourth, We have a friend who has hunted the grasslands in WY but that was 15 years ago. Would you recommed trying for an area in the grasslands or does it really matter?

I would suggest looking at units that have a lot of public land otherwise you'll have to find some private landowner who will let you hunt.

Hey CVC!

Thanks for the awsome reply.... you have definitely helped me out. Not having the proper time to scout is a very big disadvantage. So your answers were right on target...

BLM....Thanks for the break down. My next question is where can I find a map of the BLM and state land togther? Also, is the BLM walk-in land or do you have to get permission from the BLM to hunt it?

Man, this is a great site! Anyone else?

You might check the Wy fish and game site to see if they have maps available or google it. I didn't buy the maps, my friends had them.

You have to have permission to hunt the HMA, but you just get that online.

The BLM land has designated roads (sort of) that you have to stay on. No permission is needed to hunt there, but stay on the roads with your vehicle.

Welcome to BGH Yankeehunter!

I have not personally hunted in Wyoming, however we have lots of folks here that have. I'm sure more will jump in and help you out.

About western BLM land; generally it is the most plentiful public land and the least restrictive of government lands. Maps should be easy to find. You may be able to order some directly from BLM.

Contact a Chamber of Commerce in a town close to the area you wish to hunt, they usually have maps or can direct you to someone that sells them.

Good Luck! Big smile

Thanks Cowgal!

I figured that the BLM had a website but just didn't have the time to research but here you folks are again and BAM! their it is. I just went in real quick and looked at Wyoming BLM and wow they have some land, as soon as I finish up here I plan on going back to the website and doing some more research. I did notice that there was mention of fishing, hiking, camping, etc.... but no mention of hunting. I presume that they are trying to ward of PETA but do you have to call the regional office for hunting information?

Now I have seen a map of an area that had walk-in areas highlighted in red with public access or parking and it also had land highlighted in light blue could this have been BLM land?

Thanks Folks! Keep 'Em Comin' Thumbs up

yankeehunter, Welcome to BGH! Big smile Most of Wyoming's units that have a lot of public land will have low draw odds. You might need to purchasing a preference point or two in order to draw those tags but maybe you will draw the first year? Wyoming gives out 25% of the tags on a random draw and points won't matter for those. You and your friend might want to apply together as a party, so either you both will draw or neither of you two will.

Hey Folks!

Man, I am overwhelmed with the responses. My buddy and I have already bought a couple preference points in hopes of getting drawn. As I told CVC, I know this isn't a guarantee but at least this will give us a foot up for next year if we don't draw this year.

We are going as a party so we will both be on the same application, that way if we get drawn we will be going together...

Thanks All for your great advice! YH
