First trip to Colorado, unit 41

A couple of friends and I are planning on head out to unit 41 or one of the ones around it for the fourth season.  It is our first time to Colorado and for most of us our first elk trip.  I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advise on good places to see elk in this area and where to find the public land.  We may be camping depending on snow conditions so recommendations on this would also be appreciated or a town to stay in close to some good hunting.

Thanks for any help

I have been in a few places

I have been in a few places in 41--all early season but right now we have not gotten a ton of snow so all should still hold elk and deer.  The first is up Kanah creek--it is off Hwy 50 btwn Delta and GJ.  It goes all the way up to the top but the elk are usually off in the lower parts of the canyon.  There is an access trail that comes off of Lands End Road about 1/2 way to the top and you can hike in from there.

The second is up Chalk Mtn.  This is accessed through the town of Mesa off of Hwy 65.  I have not been up the road in a couple of weeks but it is pretty rough and can get really muddy and there is probably about 6-8" of snow on it so probably plan on an ATV to get up it unless you hate your truck!!!!  I have talked to a few guys that have shot both deer and elk up there this year and they said there are some animals in there.

The third is above Palisade called Palisade Point.  I have only been there off of private land but suppossedly you can access the area on public roads but I am not for sure on that one.

All of that area is very steep and very rough--especially the places where the elk are.  If your tag is good for some of the other areas around there like 421 let me know and I will give you a couple of places there too.

As far as places to stay--GJ and Clifton have the most hotels.  Mesa has one hotel and it is a bit of a dive.  I am not sure about Palisade but am pretty sure they have hotels aslo

Thanks for the help.  We are

Thanks for the help.  We are pretty much open to anywhere in any of the units we will be able to hunt.  We would just like to get the best opportunity to get a chance at an elk.  Yes it is the forth season and we will have ATV.  We are still undecided if we want to stay in town or "rough" it in a tent.

I can't help you with unit

I can't help you with unit 41 but there are several western slope hunters here that will be able to provide you with best opinions on where to go.  Based on your ability to hunt several units I take it that you have the 4th season bull tag?  That obvioulsy offers more options with 41, 42, 52, 411, 421, and 521 units.  All I can offer is my wish for you and your friends to have a great hunt.

Welcome to the forum!! I

Welcome to the forum!! I don't have any information for that area as it's a bit out of my home range. but I wish you luck with your hunt and hope you have a great time. There are others here who know the area well but I think they are out hunting the 3rd season right now and there won't be much time to help you out when they get back.

It looks like you have gotten some great info here already though and hopefully you can put it to good use.
