Looking for any help with two first time elk hunters going for an over-the-counter archery hunt. Would appreciate any help or ideas that may increase our odds of seeing good numbers. Not interested in trophy or even bull. We know our odds are slim but are looking for a good overall experience. Looking at the north-west region for public land areas. Have also been milling over the idea of a drop camp. Any info would be great. Well getting ready for turkey up here in Michigan, thanks again for any info.

Unless it has changed you can come in from Pagosa Springs towards Bayfield Hwy 160 i think ,about seven miles before you get to Bayfield there is a road on your north side or right , believe it is Beaver Creek or something like that go to around Eleven Mile Canyon just a little bit before it there is a fence park there on left follow fence to corner cross and go down hill there is ponds and trails all over.
Good Luck

i went to dolores colo. from s. barre vt last fall. for my first elk hunt. unguided with 2 fellas who have been hunting the area for about 6 years. first thing get in shape, hike alot of steep stuff to get your legs and lungs in shape. find a looong stairway and run it daily. i didnt and paid dearly. those critters are heavy when dead, and they move slowly when cut into 4 pieces. its tough to breath at 11000 feet.we hunted out of stoner/rico area. camped in blm c ampground for 6 bucks a night.hunted blm land. we were in elk the first day, saw 15. one in the party got a 4x4 the second afternoon. its a point restricted area, tags available over the counter. was well worth it. by day four i had to take a day of rest. we walked a lot, glassed a lot, sat and listened looked glassed some more. it was the 3rd season, place had alreeady been hunted twice by draw tags seasons. a muzzle loader hunt followed the hunt we had.it was awesome.saw a large wolf while we were there. had a 7am, 5pm coyote on the canyon. saw mouintain cat tracks, beautiful area will go again. i took a 7mmm mag with 175 grain fusion cartridges. greg ( elk slayer) used a 760 rem pump in '06, with 165 ballistic tips. one shot through the heart at 120 yards through the trees, great
