First time Elk hunt

Hello to everyone.  This is my going to be my first time out hunting. Im going with my dad, witch is his 2nd attemp.  We are going for 2nd season OTC,  and im trying to of course figure out the best gmu fo us.  My dad doesn't want to camp because of his last experince with 14 inches of snow, and getting the trucks stuck.  We take are hunt serious and are looking for a little suggestions.  We have a couple of units in mind around Gunnison or Steamboat.  This is going to be a once in a long tme hunt for me.  Just trying to make this adventure a succesful one for my dad and I.

questions

To help you answer your own questions, where'd your dad hunt before and what did he like or not like about it?

Also, keep in mind much of the stuff around Gunnison is limited to some degree.  66 and 67 are limited draw only and 54 is OTC either sex with a cap, so you'll have to snatch that tag up quickly when it goes on sale.  55 and 551 are valid with the OTC 2nd season license.

All of the stuff around Steamboat, 14, 214, 15, 441, etc are OTC so no problem there.

Gunnison & Steamboat

You've picked two good areas.  Lots of public land in each with lots of elk.  Sucess rates are good and the country in both places is spectacular.  Buy some of the good nat. geo maps for the area you choose and use it with google earth to find areas to hunt.  Elk will be on the north and east faces.  Keep the wind in your face

Gunnison

I think we are going to try for the 54 and hope we both get a tag.  Which area of the unit do you think would be the best.  I tryied to talk to someone at the Gunnison DOW on Friday and was on hold for 20 minutes and lost cell service. I'm going to ask them more about the unit and maps.

Keep your eyes on the fires,

Keep your eyes on the fires, before you make a decision. We're almost getting new ones daily.

If you're willing to do some

If you're willing to do some hiking, the large basin drained by Pass and Castle creeks is pretty good.
