First rifle for my girlfriend (suggestions)

I would like to buy a deer rifle for my 25 year old girlfriend. She likes to deer hunt, but has to borrow her dad's 12 gauge every year, which always jams on her & is one of the reasons she hasn't gotten a deer yet. she hunts mostly open farm fields, wooded area, and some swampy area
Right now I'm thinking a 270 win would suite her good. and be a great all around deer caliber

another option I've thought about is a 30-30, but I'm not sure this would be as good as the 270 for open field shooting. The lever action would be easier for her to operate though

She likes the idea of an auto loader, but as soon as she picked one up, she didn't like how heavy it was. I'm thinking a bolt action or lever action would be good.
My trouble is that she doesn't like to check out guns, which is what she would need to do to find out what style she likes.

What would you recommend?

the 270 would be a perfect choice! also if she handles a 12 gauge that well a 30-06 wouldnt be out of the question either! the 7mm-08 is also another fine round if you stick to just deer hunting! hope this helps you with your selection.

p.s. by the way stay away from the 30-30 if your shooting over 100 yards!!

Thanks for the input. I know she'll be able to handle a 270 fine. I was pretty set on the caliber, but also open to suggestions. I've been hearing the 7mm-08 is a great low recoil round, but I think I'll stick with the 270 because the ammo is cheap, easy to find,I already have dies for it, and it is an awsome deer caliber. She will only really be using it for deer hunting, but eventually, it might be used for a black bear hunt, but nothing bigger. I know a good amount about bullet choice and weight for calibers, so if this hunt happened I'ld be able to pick out the right ammo for a bear hunt. I would probably go with 140-150 gr bullet like a partition/a-frame/x-bullet ect....for black bear.

I own a break open single shot 45-70 and a bolt action 300 win mag( that kicks like a 270). I think I'll make some light loads for both and have her try both to see which type of action she feels more comfortable using.

Oh yeah! is there any suggetions for an auto action in the 270 caliber or maybe 270 wsm that are lighter than the Browning Bar? If she could find a light weight auto, I think she'ld like that action the best.

Contrary to opinions the 30-30 is a capable deer cartridge well past 100 yards. The new Leverevolution ammo proves that. Also would be more than capable for black bear.
How much money are your willing to spend on this rifle? Benelli makes an awesome autoloader and it is fairly lightweight.
What about the 308? Not much kick on this one. And you can really load up for bear (180 grains) with factory ammo.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

The benellli looks like a great rifle, but my price range is preferably under $500

the leverlutions (or whatever it is for the ballistic tip lever rifles) are also pretty sweet. i may be having a brain fart, but i believe the balists of the 30-30 leverlutions were similar to a .308

30-30 leverevolutions very similar in ballistics out to 200 yards compared with the 308 from what I understand. A lot of guys here in MN are using them in their lever actions with great success.

.243

my wife has been shooting my ruger 77 .243 for a few years and really has had good luck with it. She also uses it for coyotes. Light recoil is important for her. The stock is regular size and can be an issue for quick shots, i would recommend getting a youth size if she's little.
