First PA Rifle Hunt

I'm going on my first rifle hunt in PA on the 26th and 27th in Pike County. I have a friend that lives there and he invited me down for the hunt. Does anyone how the deer herd in Pike County (3D) is and how the buck population is? I think we're hunting somewhere in the Delaware State Forest. I'll be down there to scout Thanksgiving weekend.

Enjoy the T'day football and turkey 'cause the deer hunting is poor in DSF. Little matter how far in you hike or what time you leave the truck I can guarrantee one thing you WILL see...an ocean of "Hunter Orange".
IMHO you'll stand a better chance of getting a shot at a blk bear than you will a whitetail buck do you have a doe tag? so get a bear tag.
Maybe this isn't what you wanted to hear but it is the truth.

I missed a nice 8 point this year during archery in the Delaware State Forest....your bound to see lots of hunters in that area, but yes there are definitely deer in that area....I usually always see deer in the DSF. How well does your friend know the area? My opinion on that area would be to get back off the beaten path as best as you can, get up in a tree in a fairly thick area that has strong deer trails and your bound to see something! Lots of guys are going to be moving and the deer are going to be avoiding them as best as they can, nice thick areas are good cause 99% of hunters are not going to get into them and lots of deer will be heading for cover. I personally hunt like this in lots of places I go and always do well, just a technique I favor...even if you only have a 20yd shot....its better than sitting in the open hoping a deer walks by....only to see orange after orange, lol. Good luck, let us know how you do! Thumbs up

I wanted to edit out "burn it if you do" from my prior post but keep getting a window that reads "I can't edit a post after it was replied to".
I couldn't figure out how to delete the post either maybe a mod. will delete that line for me.
I'm anti doe hunting in areas of low deer numbers but I guess there are still people whom are happy to kill any deer they see and it is legal.

Well said,we do the same thing, got to get off the beaten path.Lots of Hunters don't like to walk in that far,get yourself a light weight deer cart if you don't already have, specially if you go way in where you can use it easy enough,
didn't go this year do to certain situations but we are definately going back next year.We rent a cabin right at promised land state park, and hunt all the delaware state forest.its nice country there.Good luck this year.

Been a couple of years since I hunted that area but there are definatly deer still there. Just checked with a friend of mine a few minutes ago and so far he knows of 3 bucks and around 11 does taken there by friends and himself during archery. Lots of sign. Malt is definatly correct in one thing he said, you are going to see a LOT of orange as you see on most all of PGC lands on opening day. With that knowledge I myself would be prepared to get as deep in as you can, as EARLY as you can and stay put all day. Game land hunters typicly leave out around 10am for lunch and stuff.. Its that time that you will see deer going absolutely NUTS so be prepared. They will also be heading back in around 2pm so then again be ready for a major rush as well. Good luck on your hunt and stay safe.

the deer are there!
been hunting that area last 3 seasons, 2 of them successful.
some areas to check, are in the thick stuff!!
these deer are onto you! Yes
also, if you do not have a doe tag, get a bear tag...plenty o'blackies there, with some REALLY nice trophy sized. the first week of rifle season is an extended bear season in that wmu.

if you are not familiar with the area i STRONGLY recomend having a compass and topo map with you at all times, and take and check bearing frequent...it gets thick in some ares fast! as stated promised land is good, also check out around pecks pond.
either way stay safe, have fun and good luck!

I just checked on the PA Game Commission website and it says Black Bear is statewide Nov 19-21 and then in 3D it is Nov 28-Dec1 and I'm only hunting on Nov 26 and 27 so I guess no Black Bear for me sad
