First Moose Hunt....Help!!!

I am going on my first moose hunt flying out of White River, Ontario! I need some tips on gear, tactics and any other tips. There does not seem to be a lot of info on the topic and I keep getting different ranges for the rut dates. If any one can help on the topic I would appreciate it. My dad hunts this area every other year and its a do it yourself trip and he isnt my hunting partner. My rifle is a XCR .375 ultra mag, Leupold 3.5-10 VIII, and 300 grain factory loads. So I know I am possibly over gunned but I need help with other gear, such as clothing.

Rubber boots, with felt liners (should cost less than $50).

Insect repellant 100% DEET. -- And a mosquito head net or jacket.

Waterproof clothing. I got some waterproof fleece and Goretex stuff. Plastic slicker and pants will work. Wear layers of fleece underneath in case it gets cold.

Moose call.

Life jacket, if you are in a boat.

Knife, with portable sharpener.

Pack frame to pack out the meat. Cheesecloth bags and rope to carry it out.

Food, tent, cot, insulating sleeping pad, mosquito net, and a sleeping bag.

Toilet paper.

That's the short list. Leave everything else at home. Think about it alternating between snow, rain, wind storms, and sunny calm days. Hunt hard on the sunny, calm day. Bull moose resond to calling and they can hear better on a calm day. Cow-call for an hour or two in one spot. Be very quiet and listen for the bull's grunt. Ideally, shoot the animal while it is standing on dry land, close to the tent.

Ranges for the rut dates??

The moose rut starts during the full moon in September regardless of state/province. Two to three days prior to the full moon to be exact. Once a bull is "hooked up " with his new girlfriend all the calling in the world won't get him away from her unless he is forced away by a bigger bull.
It is the bull that has no date for the evening that you will be attracting.
How long does the rut last ?
If you got a high concentration of cows and only a few bulls, then the rut might not ever fully start.

Here's a thread for some good info on packing for a moose hunt. Keep in mind that this would be for a remote hunt in Alaska so you'll have to weed out the items unnecessary for your part of the world: http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/showthread.php?t=2976

The moose rut start is dictated by the lack of daylight, not the moon nor the "cold" weather, first frost, ect. Anything after mid sept should be game on though.

In the thread akpls posted, read carefully what "Alskacanoe" posted. If you're driving to this hunt, then maybe you dont need to skimp THAT much, but its still a good read, as well as hilarious too. LOL

I wish I had a dollars for every bull that was called during the full moon, whether it fall on Sept 7th(this year) or not. Maybe there are other factors to consider too
One factor is that ..The further into the rut, the less cautious the bull.

Your Dollar is worth more than our looney but I'll take what I can get.
When I went to register on BGH, user name Hammer was already taken so I just added a 1 Rather an Ingenious idea, I must say Big smile
The nickname " Hammer" was bestowed upon me after winning an aquital on a Seat Belt Violation, high profile indeed Big smile . after my understudy "Jim The Hammer Shapiro"
Now you know the "rest of the sorry story." lol lol lol

Which month are you hunting? October moose opener for gun? If your are moose will still be rutting fairly actively. I have generally had good luck hunting the natural funnels close to water in early season when the moose are still feeding on aquatics. As timesawastin said a good pair of rubber or water proof boots and layers are a must. You never know what to expect in the early fall in this country. I have seen hard frosts by morning and then be sitting in boat, fishing with the blackflies wearing a t-shirt by afternoon because it is too hot to hunt. So don't forget your rod. Rain or snow is also I very real possibility so be prepared for all types of weather. Good Luck!

Regardless of moon, the average date for the peak of the first rut will be 26th September. The next rut will take place at the end of October but yields far less response than the first one.

There is only one rut. A bull moose that loses his mate for whatever reason will continue his quest for love and affection, so to speak. He wil change partners too,but only if another cow is close by. He will not leave a "sure thing". He will not return to a previous girlfriend, he served his purpose, and is not welcomed.
