Don't forget to bring some rope

One essential not mentioned yet is a supply of rope.  A 50 foot length of parachute cord won't weigh much or take up any room in you pack (great choice of pack by the way) & you'll really be glad you've got it if & when you need it.

I'd suggest a supply of TP and some handiwipes in a zip lock also.  Not just for the obvious reasons.  TP makes a good trail blazer to mark your trail that deteriorates in case you forget to pick it up when you leave the woods.  The and the wipes will come in handy to clean off the blood from your hands after you gut your first deer.

Goose Hunter was right too - the most important thing to have is a good time!

in the Catskills

Welcome!

You should have cell phone coverage just about everywhere in the Catskills.  So after a rifle and ammunition, I would recommend packing a fully charged cell phone.  Beyond that - wearing blaze orange is a great idea.  Next - bring matches in case you get wet or lost and need to stay warm.  You really don't need a lot of gear to have a good hunt, just concentrate on being SAFE.  Don't forget to sign up for a hunter education class.  You need that in order to get your hunting license and they book up fast in NY.  They only have a couple of classes per year so try to sign up for one at least 6 months before hunting season (ie - do it ASAP).  They'll cover a lot about the basics of hunting, safety, and gear in the state hunter education class.

Over the weekend my brother

Over the weekend my brother was trying to talk me into buying a benchmade knife to use for hunting, I'll be honest they do nothing for me, what i wanted was a more traditional looking knife with a blade lenth around three and a half to four at the most. So I searched and searched and I looked at cabelas, and gander, and some other sites but I didn't really see anything, stainless steel is not my favorite metrial in the world, I really prefer carbon steel, I think it holds an edge longer, some are a little tougher to sharpening but when it does it's razor. I actually settled on a Knife made by a norweign company named HELLE.
There knife are hand made, ( or supposedly ) and have a lifetime warranty. I bought the ODELL knife. It has a three and a half inch blade, a wood and rain deer antler handle, it's a good looking knife but not to the point where I wouldn't want to use it. I'll post pics. When I get it.
