First Hunt!

Well I got out this weekend for my first deer hunt! No deer but an awesome experience!

I left Friday after work straight to my spot to make sure I got there first and possibly deter others from hunting there if someone else was there! I got there and I was all alone. Woke up at 3 am to eat breakfast and hike in, No one else was there yet either. Well it must be a forgotten hunting spot because no one else was any where near there all day sat.  The day started off super windy and hot. It got well into the 90's. But once the wind calmed down about at about 3pm. I heard a war cry, I guess. I don't no my deer calls yet. But then it was a small stampede of deer that stopped right in front of me. There was a doe, a healthy looking spike, and another one that stayed hidden. the spike stuck around for about 30 min and that was it for the day.

I went home that night because I couldn't handle another full day of that heat. got back out there at about 2pm on sun and at about 4pm it sounded like a war zone. A group of bachelor males and a lone female decided to go Plinking. Where might you ask? Just down the road from where I was! So nothing was going to move. I stayed anyways just in case they might stop shooting! So as I was driving down the road I ran into them, they were shooting across the road into the trees in the valley. The best part is that they were parked right next to the no shooting sign. I called the Ranger station but no one answered and there was no answering machine either.

Well that was my opener how was everyone elses?

Sorry to hear you did not get

Sorry to hear you did not get a deer but glad you had a good time and got out hunting. That is pretty cool you had the whole area to yourself. Sucks folks cannot read the signs and obey the laws and somewhat ruined your evening hunt. As for me I still have 2 weeks before my season so I am getting very excited to go. Good luck to you in your future hunts.

Sorry to hear about your

Sorry to hear about your opener.

And that's part of why today's society is in the crapper, no one cares anymore. I'd've had my hide tanned for something stupid like that.

Glad to see that you at least

Glad to see that you at least saw some deer.  If I had been in your spot, I would have one hanging already since I have a doe tag.  Stinks having to sit and watch a spike, huh?  In cases like yours is the reason I am against antler restrictions.

You are a first time hunter, excited, etc., and I am not totally sure, but my guess is you will shoot the first legal buck, and be incredibly excited about it, correct?  Well, here comes a BUCK, which in my mind, as a spike is NO DIFFERENT than another yearling who may have been lucky enough to sprout a fork.  Well, you get all excited, only to not be able to shoot it.  There is no reason for them to take away that potential excitement from you, as a new hunter, or a 20 year hunter for that matter.

Anyway, let me get off my soap box.  I made it out Sunday, about 20 miles to your east as the crow flies.  I saw lots of tracks and droppings, but didn't see anything moving but a few hikers.  Oh well, still good to get out.

I'll be out there again on Monday, Halloween morning.  Let me know if you plan on hitting it again.  Good luck to you!

I agree with your point

I agree with your point restriction statements. And in some management things I've read it should be the spike that gets removed first anyway due to poor genes or something.

I'm glad you had a good time

I'm glad you had a good time and actually got to see some deer. It's too bad somebody had to make a mess of things but at least you didn't let it spoil your overall experience.

Hopefully you have some more time to get back out there and things cool off a little bit for you. We should have snow piling up here by the time I get back out with my daughter on Thursday evening.

Glad to hear you had a good

Glad to hear you had a good time. Nice you saw some deer. Too bad the spikes in your area aren't legal. Like CA_ says that is a dumb regulation. Too bad about the dumbasses ruining your hunt by shooting where they weren't supossed to be. Did I read that right that they were also shooting accross a road? We have had the same issues up here with people shooting up trees (which is illegal on any federal land) and shooting where their not supossed to be. For that reason the USFS has closed down a lot of place where people would go shoot in our local mountains. It's just to bad that a few can't fallow the rules and ruin it for everyone else. I hope the rest of your season goes good and you'll be able to shoot your first deer. Good luck

Ha!

I just thought of the regulation like fishing where it has to be a certain size so it has had a chance to reproduce. But since its just chance that it didn't sprout forks That is defiantly a little frustrating! I could be eating deer burger right now, Lame!

As for those shooters I realized that maybe I shouldn't make to big a stink since it seams when they have a problem area they just shut it down completely. I almost stopped to talk with them and explain why they shouldn't be shooting there but it didn't seem safe to scold a bunch of Bro's being stupid with guns!

The last part was kind of funny, but said that you couldn't get the ranger to bust there a$$. Did you get a deer the rest of the season?
