First Ever Dove Hunt

I was tired of deer hunting and not seeing anything so I went out this afternoon for my first ever dove hunt. It was me and my grandad and we had only been to these fields scouting one time. We didn't expect a whole lot but there were a few birds flying. The wind was blowing and my lakc of knowledge for dove hutning showed. I shot twice and killed two birds and that pretty much wrapped up the afternoon.

We had a great time though and the birds should come in better once second and third pahse hits. The fields should be dead and droppin seeds by then and more birds should be around. Lets hope so anyways.

Thumbs up

Those little guys are a blast, huh?  What was your shot per bird ratio?  The first time I ever hunted them I got 3 birds, and I think I went through 40 rounds or so.  Heck, the national average is about 9.5 shots per bird, so I don't feel too bad...... lol

Glad you had a fun hunt!!!

I had a great time for sure.

I had a great time for sure. I shot 2 birds and only fired 2 shots though I had a lot of practice while duck hunting last season in colorado. My average was about 3-4 birds per box during waterfowl season lol.

Though I can see where dove hunting could be hard the wind was gusty and the 2 birds i shot seemed to just glide right by me. The second shot was nearly 60 yards the first about 40. I was using a mossberg 500a with a modified choke 28inch ported barrel with #6 shot. I can't wait till second phase when I can hunt in the morning. I tend to see alot more birds in the a.m. then afternoon.Thumbs up

Okay, I missed that in your

Okay, I missed that in your original post.  2 for 2, you're batting a thousand.  Better give up now while you're ahead..... Yes

Seriously though, even though you don't get alot of meat, and I don't like it as much as venison, It is one of the most frustrating but fun hunting trips to do.  Out here, there are 2500 hunters on average in the public fields, and tens of thousands of birds.  It's like a war zone all morning.  It's a blast, both literally and figuratively...... lol

Sounds like fun. I was really

Sounds like fun. I was really hoping to get out this year but I was just too busy between work and school to find the time. I saw some guys hunting them while I was out hunting ducks and they had some luck and that was just in the last two weeks. I though most of the doves would have been gone by then.
