Hi Everyone! Went on my first Elk hunt last October in Hotchkiss Colorado and got my first Elk! It was like nothing I could ever dream of, absolutely AWESOME! My question is that after my Elk was processed, I got the meat, rack, and a small bag with two little things that look like cloves of garlic that were bone. What are these two things? Thanks so much guys!
those are your elks bugler teeth or ivories. They don't actually help the elk bugle. they can be used to make jewelry or just a keepsake to remind you of a successful hunt.
Welcome to BGH, tell us more about your hunt. Any pics?
Thanks so much for the help! As I said, it was awesome! We horsebacked up to our camp outside of Hotchkiss Colorado and stayed in tents for 5 days. First night we had a bear come into camp, now that might not sound like much to most, but from a Chicagoan who has only seen a huge racoon, it scared the shit out of me! I had a couple of chances to get an Elk within the first couple of days but I blew it, newbee mistakes like slinging the gun over the head and shoulder. The Elk seem to key in on what you are doing when you fumble like an idiot to get a shot off. Got mine on the fourth day at 8:47 in the morning. He came up over a ridge and just stopped about 75yds away with a clean broadside shot. Took him down with one clean shot, no kicking or movement after the shot. I was so fired up I wanted to give out a war cry! It was the greatest experience that I have had in life! From being out in the middle of nowhere, tracking them down, hearing the bugles, and the kill! Here is a pic of my guy:

Awesome congrats, you got me even more excited reading about your excitement. Yes, those are your buglers if you check out a Bugle magazine from the Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation theres always tons of advertisements in it from jewelers for bugler pieces. I save mine from the bulls I've taken and plan on getting something done for me and my wife eventually.
And, yup! You've got the elk hunting addiction nothing quite like it. I've been reloading and shooting like mad lately with my 30-06 and 7 mm Mag all in preparation for this years elk season. Can't wait!!!
Cheers
Congrats on your first elk. Maybe this year I would be posting my first elk on the forum as well.
Yup it sounds like those are your elk's ivories. They really are Ivory and the only legal Ivory that you can own. You earned them, so enjoy. Congrats!!
Very cool and congrats!
Thanks for sharing your story and pics.
Thanks so much guys! I am truely hooked now, making my girlfriend sit through hours of hunting shows now. She loves how the Elk tastes but could do without the tv. I have to give all the credit to Larry Allen at Hubbard Creek Outfitters, he was amazing!
Congrats. So did you have any other big game hunting experience before that trip?
I too got excited!!! Nice work man! ![]()
