First day of deer hunting(rifle)

First day is done but I saw 6 deer. Four does(two large ones) and two spikes. No shooters in the mix. The does were shooters but the season is too young. I'm after bucks this year. There is always tomorrow. Thumbs up

I'm hunting on the South Shore of NS. There is not a bad population of deer here but it pales in comparison to other provinces(except PEI) and states. We have about 65000 deer in NS so we are not tripping over them but there is enough sign to keep you on your toes. I have seen a big buck during pre-season scouting so I am after him if he is still in the area. I'm always fussy the first part of the season but the criteria gets more narrow as the season goes on. I've been stuck with a tag before.

6 deer in NS is fantastic. The inlaws have been at it since the opener and have seen squat.

Good luck - hope you find your shooter.

Well the 6 deer on the first day may have been the golden opportunity. I have seen niether hide nor hair of another deer since not even a single track! Brick Wall,) I know the buck I was after has been tagged Cry so he is out of the picture. He was a 9 point heavy bodied deer and the hunter who got him deserved it. He hunted him harder than anybody, including me. Those couple of mature does may have been the ticket but too late now. I still have two weeks so I am going to have to bust some bushes and find out where the little darlings are hiding. I suspect that they have been tended by another buck and in a slightly different area.

Crappy.

In-laws have been seeing some does but: they've all been at excessive ranges across some new clearcuts, and in any event they don't have antlerless tags this year. They're taking the last week off for one more effort, although I suspect it'll end up being more of a guys week out rather than a serious hunting trip.

Good luck with the rest of the year.
