first colorado hunt of the season

Well i went on my first hunt of the season this weekend. i was bow hunting for elk in unit 7 and 8. Got into some good country away from the roads and the people. i didn't see any elk, but i sure could hear them at night. They've started bugling, but only during the evenings and late at night. i saw four cow moose and two deer. and the deer that i saw were whitetails! i couldn't believe my eyes...standing there in the mountains of colorado was a 5x5 whitetail buck! at that moment i wished i had a buck tag cuz he was broadside at 40 yards. i should be going again in a couple weeks, and hopefully the elk will move down from the high peaks before then. anyone else done any good yet?

hellomcfly, Thanks for sharing your hunt with us. Yeah the whitetails are starting to cover a lot of the state now, even as far west as Craig. Keep us posted on how the season turns out for you.

3 days

I'm glad to hear a few reports of the bulls bugling. I'm headed out in three days for the MZ hunt. In the words of Flounder from Animal House...."This is gonna be great!" as I rub my hands together....... Thumbs up

Is it just me or does calling a whitetail buck a 5 X 5 sound wierd? A guy in shipping just brought his 10 point whitetail buck to work today. Just got it from his taxidermist.

NH Hunter, I think once you move out here, you'll think it sounds normal. Yes

moving?

I'd be OK with that but I'd have to convince my wife. She likes it out there but loves NH. I like it here too, but I really look forward to my time in the elk woods. I should be looking off my buddies back deck at the bulls on the hill behind his house by tomorrow evening. Heading for GMU 35/36 Friday AM. Thumbs up

Re: moving?

lol yup, we westerners call all bucks and bulls blank X blank reguardless of if it's a whitetail or not. You wouldn't call an elk a 12 point would ya? lol
