First Bull Co Public Lands

We'll me and my brother sat out yesterday afternoon to try and fill his OTC Bull tag. He got here around 5:30 and we made a mad dash up the mountain. We could hear the bugles and calls all around us and right away we spooked a bunch of cows. After about 30 minutes of the hardest hiking in my life we ran into the bull.

I proceeded to back off from my brother and start calling. After I did all hell broke loose. Bulls were screaming on all sides of us and there were multiple cows running within 10 yards of us. After what seamed like an eternity of calling and running the bull showed himself about 200 yards from me and about 100 from my bro. He took about a 75 yard shot with his .270. The bull was quartering away uphill hard. The bullet got him in the back and went straight into his hert and lung. We only found blood clots and no hear and only part of one lung. The bull dropped where he stood then tried to get up and run.

we saw he was down and headed up the hill right away. We didnt even have a knife with us so we had to hike back home and get everyhting. The bull was down a little after 6:00 and we didnt get him off the mountain untill after 11:00 last night.

This is my brothers first bull also. He's had a pretty damn good season considering he got his first buck on saturday. We've worked harder then ever since a month before archery for this. We're off tomarow back to unit 33 to try and fill my buck tag. We're glad to get his bull here because there way to many elk hunters in 33.

Anyone make a guess on the score???

Thanks everyone. We had a great time up there chasing elk this year. I'm sure this will go down in our familys memory forever. It would have been great to be in a large camp with the whole family and friends but it was kind of more personal just me and him. I've never really bonded with my younger brother up untill this year and it feels good to do somehting as a family even though it was just us 2.

We have one more weekend to get my buck then it's time to hang up the rifles and get out the dekes and shotguns. I'm really excited about waterfowl this year aswell.

Goodluck to anyone with an unfilled tag...

we did a quik measure on him and he scored 298 1/2" but it was my first time scoring an elk so we'll see what the taxdermist says.

Nice work. I bet you will never leave your knives at home again.

On a side note, I just wanted to say thanks for removing all your blaze orange for the photo. Nothing ruins a photo more than blaze orange, for exactly the same reason it is so useful in the field.

Congratulations. Great looking elk. I'd rough him at 320 class. Perhaps closer to 330, kind of hard to tell though. Let me know when you find out for sure.

nice bull...I don't want to tell you your business but, couldn't help but, notive that your brother tagged the bull on the antler. About 10 years ago a guy that I hunt with was fined for the same thing. The officer explained very sternly that the tag was a carcuss tag and not an antler tag. I don't know if he was just having a bad day or if all the dow officers feel the same way but, for what it is worth that is what I have seen. Just trying to save you and your brother some money

Again a very fine Colorado bull
