Welcome to the site and to

Welcome to the site and to elk hunting.  The first thing that you need to do is to go the the Colorado Division of Wildlife web site http://wildlife.state.co.us/ and download their on line guide book.  That will give you a lot of information on which units can be had over the counter.  As far as preference points you can also find that on the web site or http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/Statistics/ .  Also for a first time elk hunter I would suggest that you check out the Elk Hunting University http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/ElkHuntingUniversity/

Now that I have you in information overload don't hesitate to ask some questions here.  There is a lot of information just waiting to be shared.

Ok you asked for it you want questions you got em. We were planning on packing in and not coming out till we either need to pac meet out or the trip is over. Is this alowed on all public land or no? Otc tags can you buy those on the internet and have them sent to your house prior to the trip or do you have to buy them there? I am assuming that otc tags are unlimited? thanks for all of the sites that was very helpfull.

On public land you can pack

On public land you can pack in and stay until you have decided that you have had enough of the mountains or the mountains get the better of you.

You can buy otc tags either on the internet and have them sent to you or just about any gas station or store out here will be able to sell them to you.  The only real requirement is that you have proof of hunter safety, or a bowhunters course if you were born after Jan 1, 1949 and must be carried on your person unless it has been verified by the Colorado DOW.

elk

Sorry to bore you with all of this stuff but you have been a huge help. i narrowed down my units to three or four. Called colorado today and got my cid # and talked that guys ear off today. couple more questions for you. Do you carry a side arm with you when you are out there and if so are there places that dont allow it? I am obviously hunting public land and just cerious what you do with the truck, do they have places where you can leave it? Iam planning on 12 or 13 days for the whole trip witch would leave me with two days of driving, three days of packin in and out and eight days of huntin. sound like enough to you? thats all fine and dandy unless we both tag out that would put a couple more days on the packing part. I am also planning on switchin to fixed blade broadheads, i have herd some stories about mechanicals not pennatrating enough. Thoughts?

You can legally pack a side

You can legally pack a side arm while bow hunting but I never have.  I have also came across a couple of bears and one that made things interesting for a couple of minutes.  But figure it this way, can you hit something the size of a tennis ball as it is coming at you on a dead run?  My suggestion is if you are worried about bears to use some bear spray.  It works.  Also it is illegal to put down a animal with a firearm if you are bow hunting.  As far as leaving a truck at a trail head it is a toss up.  I have left mine and have seen a lot of others left with no problems for up to a week.  If you have any questions on this you should contact the government agency that oversees the area that you are planning on hunting and see what they recommend.  A two week pack in hunting trip should do you quite well.  At least you should get to know the area quite well while you are there.  Now for the broadhead a fixed blade works quite well.  That is all that I have ever shot and have never seen a need to go to a mechanical one.  If your aim is true along with the flight of the arrow you should have no problems with them.

On other site that I would recommend to you to check out is  http://www.westernhuntingdata.com/

You have to pay a little for the information but it should be valuable to you and your friend to see what to expect in the area that you are planning on hunting.

There is all kinds of public

There is all kinds of public ground in Colorado, National Forest and BLM.  In one of your previous post you said that you planned on a pack in hunt so I would suppose that means a wilderness area which there are quite a few.  You just need to get some planning done on where you are going and then check with the Forest Service or BLM as far as access points.  One problem with Colorado is that if a person owns the bottom land he can lock out a lot of prime hunting country by not allowing access.

Colorado Archery

Hopefully I can give you at least an option on where to hunt in Colorado!  I've hunted in Unit 444 for about ten years now, the entire unit is public hunting-OTC.  I've hunted this unit about three times with Archery equipment but most of the time it has been either 2nd or 3rd season rifle, combination Elk/Deer.

The first two years that I hunted the unit we stayed in wall tents and are camp was in a very small public camp ground call Elk Wallow camp ground. So if you choose to tent it, there is a nice little area there for you, and chances are you may not be the only ones taking advantage of it. First come, First served!!

After a while hunting in this unit, I stumbled acrossed a ranch called the Biglow ranch.  There are a few decent cabins there and the rancher only charges a minimum fee for each night that you stay there.  I really like the cabins because there sitting @ about 9,500 ft. (I would have to check my GPS for the exact altitude) you walk out of your cabin and your already in some good hunting areas.

Keep in mind that it is NOT a trophy area and big bulls are few and far between. However,I was very fortunate to take a 300 class bull from that unit (2nd season rifle),and I had found some very nice sheds as well. There are some elk in the unit, you have to find them!!!

If you think that your interested in the unit and cabins, or camp grounds, I'd be more than willing to help or give you some more info.

Elk unit, cabin and campground info.

I was reading your reply and am planning a 2011 DIY archery hunting Colorado and would be interested in any information you could provide. I'm looking to pack in and camp but am interested in the unit and cabins you were referring to in your post. If you could provide GPS coordinates that would be great too.

Thanks
