First archery elk hunt in Colorado

I'm starting to research and plan for my first Elk hunt ever. I'll be hunting on public land near the town of Meeker which borders units 422, 423 and 425 during the middle of September. I've never hunted for Elk before and I'm also making it more challenging by taking my compound bow. I'm looking for any advice you can give me on calls to buy, camo and clothing to wear, hunting tactics etc. Anything that will help me make my hunt more enjoyable and better my chances at filling my tag would be greatly appreciated. I'm from PA and have never been to CO so I really don't know what I'm getting into.

Welcome to BGH. Not sure where to begin with you, but let's start by straightening out those units. Units 22, 23, 24,25 are near Meeker. The units you named do not exist, but theres a 421 down by Grand Mesa, 4 and 441 are north of Meeker, around Craig. Anyway, next problem, you are not hunting unit 23 this year, unless you have preference points. You may be able to get into 24 and 33 with 0 preference points. 25,26 and 22 can be had over the counter.
Next, you need to time your hunt to when the elk will be more responsive to your calls. Mid to late September is your best bet.
Calls, clothing, etc, doesn't matter as long as it's within the wide range of appropriate stuff out there, you're comfortable and know how to use it. And don't over call. In fact, don't even bring a bugle during the day time to resist blowing the elk out of an area.

Sorry i was looking at the CDOW districts instead of the units. All I really know is that Meeker will be the closest town to us and I will be hunting the week of the Sept 13th.

Ok, but you need to apply for the most of the Flat Tops units outside of Meeker and the Elkheads/Bear's Ears up near Craig. Are you hunting OTC or are you applying? You can draw the Southern half of the Flat Tops with no points as a nonresident, but not the north half which is the most popular. The canyon country west of the Flat Tops are OTC, and the far east end of the Flat Tops are OTC also. And the week of the 13th is also muzzleloader season, so excpect plenty of company.
Just trying to help, not trying to badger you, but I think you guys need to do some more planning. If your friends or family or whoever is actually doing the planning normally rifle hunts out there during rifle season, you need to know that not all the units that are OTC for rifle are OTC for archery.

OTC. The crew I'm going out with includes some guys that have hunted out there for many years. They are experienced and know the area well. The group leader never said specifically where we'll be hunting but he did note the closest town was Meeker so we'll be hunting the areas that don't require any preference points. i'm just trying to get some extra info on CO elk hunting in general. I've only ever hunted with a bow from a tree so this will be quite the challenge for me. Obviously everyone had their own tactics but i figured any extra info would help.

Exbiologist is right about the units. Note that if you plan to hunt deer as well you definitely need to put in for the draw, since deer are not OTC.

At the very minimum I would get a few cow calls. Also for the time of year remember to bring layers of clothing and be prepared for the possibility of a snap snow storm. Not terribly likely but it can happen at that time of year depending on the elevation.

pick up a few elk hunting videos. Buy yourself a couple calls preferably diaphragm call if you can use em. listen to the elk on the video and try to mimic. by the end of the summer you should have it down. Use your call sparingly. You will usually find elk during archery season on north facing slopes in the thickest nastiest brush on the mountain. aspen groves and dark timber will hold them as well. Look for wallows and rubs. when your in thick sign stop and call a couple times then wait at least 20 min. before moving on . move slowly or you will bust em. Elk are big targets but do not try to shoot them past 40 yards. they will jump your bow string and if you do not hit them in the hart or lungs you will most likely never find them. good luck
