First Antelope Hunt!!

Hi everyone, I just came back last week from my first antelope hunt in Wyoming. I met up with my good friend JT from Washington State in Douglas Wyoming. We were guided by his good friend Bill S. who lives in Douglas. We hunted on private land in unit 29. This was JT's fourth year in a row hunting on two ranches right outside of town. One ranch was 3000 acres and the other was 7000 acres.  I will never forget the sight of so many animals. We  had to drive about 7 or 8 miles on a dirt road through one ranch that we couldn't hunt before getting to "our" ranch. There were antelopes everywhere!! We finally crossed a cattle guard that indicated we could start hunting. JT was up first and we immediately began to see some nice bucks. He decided to take a very nice one that stood only 110 yds. off the road. JT made a very nice offhand shot. I was up next and it wasn't long before we saw a whopper! We ranged him at 337 and he was slowly walking away. He stopped at about 400. I was lying prone with a bipod. I sqeezed the trigger and dust kicked up between his legs. A clean miss. I figured to hold 18" high with the  270 win. 130 gr. sighted dead on at 200. What I didn't figure was these guys are alot smaller than our upstate NY whitetails and I put the crosshairs at the top of his back.  Well it wasn't too long before we spotted two more bucks. These were less than 100 yards. Just right! I took the bigger of the two and we were tagged out in the first few hours. Needless to say I'm HOOKED! Here's a couple photos of the bucks. Kevin

Congratulations on your first

Congratulations on your first antelope! A coulpe of other guys here went for the first time as well and like them I bet your already planning your next trip. WE have been going into Wyoming from Colorado for about 5 or 6 years now and have no plans on ever giving it up. This has got to be one of the easiest and most fun hunts you can go on.

Congratulations again and hope the rest of your seasons go as well.

Congrats!

Wyoming antelope hunting has got to be one of the best "fun" hunts in the west.  Like you mention, the number of animals (in pretty much every direction), number of tags one can obtain, and the length of the seasons make it very easy for out of staters to make the trip.  Like Hunter25 said, it's a hunt that will probably continue well into the future for most who try it.

Those are a couple of nice bucks!  Sounds like a great time meeting up with your buddies too.  Pretty cool hunt, thanks for sharing it with us.

Very cool!  A big congrats to you!

I actually have family in Douglas, and have an open invitation to go up there whenever I want.  They do not hunt, but they say that they see antelope right off their deck in their backyard.  I am going to check it out one of these years.

Looks like you guys had a great time!

Thanks And You're Right!!

Thank you for the nice words guys. Hunter 25 you are right, I got the invite to go back next year and Lord willing I'll be there! It was a very fun and easy hunt, unlike some others I've experienced. The people in Douglas were very very nice. In fact there was a free all you could eat BBQ buffet at a local restaurant for hunters only! You don't see that in NY. All you had to do was show your hunting license! Meat Hunter mentioned the amount of tags available. My buddy went to the hardware store and picked up a doe tag for area 30. The cost was $34 which I thought was very cheap. The man that worked at the hardware store was very helpful and told him right where he should hunt (public land) He filled that tag the next day. Again the trip was great and we are planning on doing it again next year. Thanks again and happy hunting to all. Kevin

Congratulations or your first

Congratulations or your first goat and a fine looking one too. As you said, they are not that big but they sure are fun to hunt. It is easy to get hooked on hunting them and once you do it you want more. Again great job on the hunt, thanks for the story and photos. Good luck on your future hunts.

Outstanding!

Outstanding BoneCollector! What really makes your hunt special is that you had your boy along. Kudos to you!! And to fill that many tags was the icing on the cake. Take care Kevin
