I still have not shot a quail yet.  Can't hit the darn things.... lol

99% of misses on a rising bird/target are missed low and behind. get a little higher and a lil farther ahead and follow thru and you'll soon see your shot to kill ratio quickly even out.

I think the main problem for

I think the main problem for me is that every time I have hunted quail, it has been without a dog, just busting brush.  Therefore, when they flush, they startle me, and I shoot right away.  They are only a few feet in front of me, and I don't think the pattern has time to spread out.  However, if I actually had a dog on point, and know there was a bird there, I could be ready, relaxed, and take my time.

I dunno

I dunno about the relax part !!  hehe

I sometimes get so excited just watching a good dog work the brush and birds that sometimes I wish I could freeze time for just a little while. Almost nothing more beautiful(Sara Evans is #1) than a good Bird Dog working.

A flushed Quail can go from zero to haulin a** in about 1/4 of a second as soon as they clear the cover they are in. Couple that with the angle of the flight path, usually away from the dog, and the tendency to want to "see" the bird will make you keep your gun barrel under and behind the fleeing bird resulting in a behind and low shot.

Add that to the scoff that you'll get from a good dog and you'll be having a frustrating day !!lol
