Finding bulk bear bait

Im looking for suggestions for places to find inexpensive bulk raisins, gummi bears, honey, molassas etc and other ideas of bulk bait that could be used.

I have heard of farmers getting bulk gummi bear rejects and use that for a food substitute, just don't know hwere they are getting it

And here i was beginning to think that i was the only north countrian on site. Try hitting up bakery's for day old pastries the bear loves this stuff. Fastfood joints for there used grease, restraunts in your area also for grease and any outdated or leftover food. Also pick up a copy of "Outdoor News" {mainly a minnesota publication} as i have seen ads in the classified section for guys selling bait. Heck sure don't hurt to give it a try.

Idaho I buy the stuff from Bread stores for $4 a hlf rack. I buy about $20 worth to bait 2 bait sites and get about 5 garbage cans full after walking on it in the can. So they weigh around 125 -150 pds. But it is very inexpensive. also pick up free grease from the restuarants from there grease bins. Also scrap meat from the butcher shops or slaughter houses for free.

If bread works as bait, you may want to try a bread bakery too (a big one that supplies to grocery stores, not a smaller shop). I worked at one for awhile and the leftovers were just thrown away, chances are they might just give you the stuff that is headed for the dumpster anyway.

Thanks everyone. good tips. Swampstalker, where in MN are you from and what area do you hunt?

I am looking at running at least 10 baits when baiting season starts and slimming them down to no less than 6 by the time the hunting season starts. I never had an issue with finding enough bait dumpster diving with 2 bait stations, but with expanding to 10 I figured I needed to start much earlier with the gathering and stockpiling the bait in storage.

Hey korn_fish how's it goin today. Hope your getting some good info here. This is one of the besr forums that I have found on the web, another good one is if you go to cabelas.com they come up with good topics also. Anyway I'm from over by Alexandria, and hunt about 60 miles north of crosby by remer. Haven't done to well the last couple years, I think it's because they've had to much natural food and there is getting to be to d#*n many hunters with to many bait sites out. Whats your view on this??

Swampstalker - I hunt a state forest, but I find that if I am willing to bust my butt scouting and willing to get off the beaten path that I don't have to worry too much about other hunters and their bait stations. There actually isn't enought applicants in area 51 to get enough hunters. They practically have to give them away. there is usually a lot of hunters the first week of the season, but then really tapers off to a few hard core hunters and area guides hunting the area after that first week. Last year they still didnt sell all of the licenses for area 51.

I only hunted 3 days this year, but knew of only 4 other bear hunters hunting the state forest at the same time. however, One of them did tag a small boar about 100 yards from my bait station though. He shot it when I had a sow and two cubs coming into my bait station which ended up scaring the sow and cubs away. I wouldn't have taken the sow anyway so it wasn't a big deal. Most of us work together and for the most part try to stay out of each others area. The guy that shot that bear only 200 yards from my station had only one bait going, so he couldn't be selective on where he set up. I knew he was somwhere close from talking to him before, just not that close  I only set up in that area becuase I got busted by a boar on my other stand the night before.

Go to fast food places and get french fry grease that stuff works great.
Find a person that bakes cookies, bread, pies for INN'S and stores they have a lot of left overs.

Places that bake and sell baked goods to stores have ampell stuff left over.

Ask the delivery drivers if they can save you some. Some places allow that, that way they don't have to take it back to the wearhouse when it gets old in the store.

These are just a few ideas.
