Find Next Season's Buck Now! (feature article)

February 2010 Feature Article: Find Next Season's Buck Now!

Nothing is more depressing to a die-hard deer hunter than watching the sun set on the last day of deer season. Regardless of how good or bad of a season it was, you always wish for one more opportunity to sit in the stand. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and once you've accepted the reality of the season's close, it can be real easy to settle into "rest mode" and wait for turkey season. The truth is, though, there is no better time than now to start preparing for the next deer season.

Im hoping that more and more hunters respond to our Game Commission regarding how bad deer hunting has become in North West Pennsylvania, there may be alot of deer near the big cities but in the mountains the deer are gone. Too many doe's are being taken and the restrictions on points should never been put in place. Pennsylvania hunting is a tradition, whether or not you were lucky enough to take a spike or a 10 pointer, made no difference. Ask the business people in Oil City or Franklin how business has declined over the past 4 years. The GC may be making the Insurance companies happy but more and more hunters are giving up because of the lack of game. Born and raised in PA like alot of out of state hunters we come back year after year to hunt out favorite game. I used to walk out of camp and see 25-40 deer. I used to see 20-30 deer on opening day. Last year I saw one mature deer and two small doe's all week. Out of a party of 6 hunters we seen a total of 5 deer the whole week. I heard the same from 4 other camps in Henry's Bend. I did have 7 other hunters in my camp but 3 have decided to hunt in their home state of Indiana where there are deer. I hope the GC will revert the deer season back to the way it was. Remember ,if it works don't fix it.
