Finally have a scouting plan

No big deal to most but after far too few days off for the summer I'm finally able to make a plan to get a little scouting done next week. I actually have 2 days off but the beginning of the first one will be spent grabbing a few leftover licenses on Tuesday and then probably a trip to the range to get some shooting done as both of my scopes have been replaced or moved. Saturday though I will be heading up to unit 10 to finally get some scouting done for my early elk tag. I've gotten a lot of good information and even have a couple of guys that know the area a bit that want to go along just for the experience as it will be a few more years before they will draw the tag. They actually want to go during the hunt as well as this tag is a pretty big deal. I got some good information from Exbiologists site as well that I will be checking out.

Can't wait to finally get out there for a look.

Congrats on finding some time

Congrats on finding some time for scouting!  If my preconceived notions about Unit 10 are remotely correct, it should be a really enjoyable scouting trip, and I hope you get some pictures you can share with us when you get back.  That will be nice having the company on the scouting trip, and even better during the season for extra hands to help with the hard work of packing out (I imagine you don't want to jinx yourself, but I will be optimistic for you).  I agree that Ex has information on his website that is worth the price of admission, besides the free nuggets he drops all over this website.  Enjoy your time off and your scouting trip!

I'm looking forward to

I'm looking forward to getting out there. Even if we don't see much game at least I'll get a better idea of the area and where to start. Since my dad and I both have tags the extra eyes will help us to cover more ground as well.

My intentions were to have gone up several times by now but you gotta make money when you can to pay for all the time off later. They won't allow the overtime once the summer business is over.

Some of the pictures getting posted this yrear already are really starting to get me pumped up.

Well the first trip out

Well the first trip out didn't go so well. First the guy who knows the area well had an emergency change of plans and was not able to go. My dad and I headed up but being new to the area we wasted a lot of time trying to figure out the roads and access points. Many roads that started on public and headed toward more were blocked by private gates. My maps didn't show this but since they were not numbered roads I should have known I guess. We did see 2 small bulls on public land in one of the areas we got too but they would not have been shooters even if the season were open, one small 5x5 and what looked to be a 4x3. We did manage a short midday hike on moosehead and got a general feel of the area there and will probably do some more in a couple of weeks. Looks good just ran out of time. I didn't realize the access was so limited there either, unless I'm wrong there is only access from the west side. Not a problem but again we wasted time as my camp will be on the east and I was hoping to come from that direction.

So at the end of the day we mostly learned where not to go and have a better idea where to start the next time out.

We also saw 5 antelope bucks, 1 fox, and a hawk flying away with a pretty big snake twisting around his legs. Wish I had kept my camera ready but missed everything with it in my pack.

I hope to make it out 3 more times before the season opens so I'm sure we'll have it down good by then.

Btw my new Oregon gps worked great other than that I had some utm coordinates to use and can't figure out yet how to change the settings and get them programmed in. Not much experience with that stuff yet.

Got another good day in

Got another good day in today! Still scouting out all the access points but have a lot of it figured out now. Saw 3 bulls today with one being a possible shooter by my standards. Not a huge monster but definately the biggest I've been close enough to shoot. Saw 4 good bucks as well but of course I won't have a tag for those guys.

A week from Saturday I'll be heading up again and putting some miles on the boots this time. Actually seeing some elk boosts the excitement level a ton. Can't wait to get back out there again.

Seeing a shooter bull before

Seeing a shooter bull before putting major miles on the boots has to be a very good sign!  Good luck on your next trip out, and be sure to take some pictures so the rest of us can share in the excitement.

I intended to take some

I intended to take some pictures today but somewhere between loading up last night and getting over there today I seem to have misplaced my camera. Hopefully I'll find it somewhere tomorrow or I'll have to get another one. The pictures are far to important to go without.

Seeing a shooter definitely

Seeing a shooter definitely can change your moral going into the hunt. I've heard those Oregon's are sweet units... just a little out of my budget right now with a mtn goat mount coming up  Thumbs up
