Field Judging

Drew 1st season Bull and a 4th season Buck tag in CO unit 61, Just wondering if anyone has some tips on quickly judging bull's and buck's. I am a little better on the buck's, I have shot 2 in the 170" range the past few years. looking for that heavy 190" or 200" buck this year. As far as the Bull the bigger the better but I wouldnt be dissapointed if I came home with a bull around the 300" mark. also any pointers on areas to check would be great. New to the forum hope I 'm doing it right.....

Festus, welcome to BGH and great looking bucks! When it comes to field judging elk you must have good tine length, decent width, and decent mainbeam length, mass helps but not as much as the others.

I will send you a PM when I get back home. Thumbs up

Good luck and good hunting!

Thank's, I have read Mike Eastmans book. I guess I'm worried about putting it all together when it counts. I wish their was an online game where you veiw a 10 sec video then have to guess at the end of the clip......

Hey great muleys festus. Before I went hunting elk I watched heaps of those elk hunting dvd's and thought about which ones I would have killed or let go before they shot them.
What you shoot depends on the weather and elk numbers. If you are seeing plenty look for one with 20 inch war tines and 2 ft of throw back length.

I really wanted a 12 pointer with 50 inch main beams like the one in the pic below. At a glance you would think this one would go close to 330 BC?

When it comes down to it you get excited just make sure there are 4 points on the elk (if you are in Colorado) If you have a few to choose from always bigger the better!
