Federal Dollars Used as a Carrot

Our KS secretary of transportation was urging our legislature to pass a bill to make not wearing a seat belt a primary offense so that our state would be eligable for federal stimulus dollars.

This is a a common practice of the federal government and a way to get around their limited powers. The federal government has not Constitutional powers to require drivers to wear seat belts so they take our dollars and hold them hostage to make the states do what they want.

I think this long standing non-partisan practice needs to stop. I realize that is like trying to stop an avalanche, but hey, each journey starts with the first step and I've just taken it.

It's not so much that the money is being used as a carrot as it is the threat of the money's removal being used as a stick.

Crack dealers have been doing this for years -- get your customer hooked on your product, and you can get her to do anything you want.

Unfortunately this has been the feds method of exerting control over the states. It does stink. Right now the states that accept the stimulus money will have to dance to the feds tune - since most of the money has strings attached. The addiction to fed money is a tough one to break. Not sure where you start.

Every state is entitled to a certain portion of the fed pot simply because its residents pay into that pot. There should not be any strings attached to that money.

Actually Californian ranks near the bottom, they just have a lot of people. It's interesting that in general blue states pay much more into the federal pot than they take out. It's always the solidly red states that are the burden on the rest of us. It's probably relative to education or general levels of civilization.

I actually wish there were more strings attached. Imagine if states were forced to teach that people didn't ride around on dinasours. Or they couldn't dump heavy metals in drinking water to dumb down small children. Oh the horror of being forced to pay unemployment.

We already covered the per capita argument on the "Palin Pointedly Protests Pork" thread, Civet. Remember that one? It was another one of those threads where you suddenly lost interest, spouted sarcasm and disappeared when facts started entering the discussion.

Libs love the per capita argument because it inflates the stats in their favor. We don't distribute federal tax dollars on a per capita basis any more than we distribute tax dollars by the square mile. As I said in the Palin thread, if we distributed based on population, more tax dollars would go to Cape Cod and the Hamptons than to places like Wounded Knee. Along the same vein, if we distributed taxes based on taxes paid in (another lib favorite), the richest communities in America would clean up and poor areas like Indian reservations and South Central wouldn't get a dime.
