I have a .270 thats about 20 years old, bolt action. It's like an old friend that comes to visit every fall. I just bought a new 7mm RUM, I think we'll get along pretty good too. My favorite is my dad's old Model 94 in the 32 Win. Spec. . It's about 60 years old, original iron sights, lots of character. I drag it out every fall and carry it for a day just so it can be in the woods, I shot a doe with it one year but truth be told it was a fluke shot, never the less, it's my favorite.

I'd stay with the 30-30 for a deer rifle, especially if you like it.

Thnaks for the advise..But I always thought that a 30-30 couldn't kill a deer at 100+ years.

The 30-30 has killed more deer than we can all count and it should be just fine out to 150 yds. With all calibres, the shot placement is way more important then the size of the round.

When first started hunting i was using guns of my dads, mostly a Rem. 722 257 Roberts. When I was able to get my first rifle of my own I spent nearly 4 months trying to figure out what would be the perfect rife. Finally decided on a Rem. 700 BDL Stainless .270 with a detachable magazine. I hunt all kinds of placed from the thick stuff in the mountains to wide open fields. This gun is more that light enough to pack in the mountains, and shoots flat enough to kill a deer farther out than most people have bussiness shooting.

Sorry guys but my big game rifle is a hand gun as in 480 Ruger Super Red Hawk with a 7 & 1/2 inch barrel. I cast my own 400 grain bullets backed up with 20 grains of H110.
