When I started shooting trap I began loading with 700X.  I later changed to Red Dot.  About 20 or so years ago I began using Hodgdon Clays powder for all my 12 ga target loads because it burns so much cleaner than either 700X or Red Dot.  For Skeet, I also load Hodgdon International for 20 ga and Hodgdon Universal for 28 ga.  I only load old style Winchester AA hulls in all four gauges.

For Trap, I shoot 1 oz of #8 1/4 shot (the size of my homemade shot) at 16 yd singles and the first shot of Doubles.  My load is the middle load listed on the Loading Data Sheet supplied with the Claybuster Lightning CB 4100-12-B wads: 17.0 grs Clays Powder for 1200 fps.

For my Trap 27 yd Handicap and second shot of Doubles, I shoot 1 1/8 oz of #7 1/2 shot in Windjammer wads.  My powder charge is basically off the Clays container and is 18.0 grs for 1200 fps.

My 12 ga Skeet load is 7/8 oz of #8 1/4 shot in the Claybuster lightning CB 4100-12-B wads and 16.5 oz of Clays powder fpr 1100 fps.  I often use this load for Trap practice at the 16 yd line.  It breaks targets just fine.

Thanks for the tips. I've never tried Clays. I might just have to pick some up after I work through what powder I have on hand, but that might take awhile since I am only shooting about 75 shells per week and have a couple pounds of shotgun powder on hand already. Might as well use it up before investing in more with the way that prices have been rising here for the last few years.  But thank you for the information.
